Rohit Sharma’s age and fitness often come under scrutiny, prompting cricket fans to debate whether he will be ready for India’s World Cup 2027 squad. The 39-year-old gave a fitting reply on Sunday (November 4) when India and New Zealand met at Eden Park, Auckland, for the first ODI of the five-match series.

However, Rohit, with his acrobatic fielding, told them that those who want him to hang up his boots will have to wait a bit longer.

Rohit Sharma Makes A Statement With Stunning Run-Out

The incident happened during the 22nd over of New Zealand’s innings when India ODI captain Shubman Gill introduced Axar Patel into the attack for the first time in the innings.

On the first delivery, Glenn Phillips nudged Axar to leg side and took a quick single after a brief hesitation. Rohit, who was placed at mid-wicket, saw an opportunity to inflict a run-out.

Within seconds, he picked up the ball and threw it underarm towards the striker’s end while flying through the air. KL Rahul did the rest, as Daryl Mitchell tried to reach the crease as fast as he could, but fell short when the wickets were broken.

The replay on the big screen confirmed the dangerous Mitchell, who has four out of nine ODI centuries against India, was run out by a little margin. More significantly, it was the first time Mitchell was run out in ODIs.

Is Questioning Rohit Sharma's Age & Fitness Justified?

Rohit’s age and fitness, in particular, become the topic of discussion whenever he falls cheaply.

Given that the likes of Ishan Kishan and Yashasvi Jaiswal are waiting in the wings, while Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi have been patiently sitting tightly for their opportunities in the 50-over setup, some cricket fans keep questioning whether one of India’s white-ball greats should make way for youngsters.

However, the BCCI must not be too strict with Rohit. He often chips in with handy contributions, and he should make the call on retirement before World Cup 2027 if he feels it is necessary for Team India’s betterment.
