One of India’s greatest ever batters in ODIs of all time, Rohit Sharma’s selection in India’s World Cup 2027 squad is still hanging in the air. While his partner-in-crime, Virat Kohli, is almost certain to be in there when the mega event takes place across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia later next year, Rohit is still in doubt about being in action.

Even though the BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia, assured that there is absolutely no doubt that Rohit would be there for the World Cup 2027 after recent meetings with the top brass, questions arise regarding whether it would be possible in reality.

Rohit Sharma’s Match-Winning Credentials Concern BCCI

A Sportstar discussion related to Rohit Sharma’s World Cup 2027 selection dream highlighted the fact that Saikia solely highlighted his last heroics at Lord’s to avoid any controversy at present.

They even claimed that there are certain individuals in the BCCI who still have doubts about whether Rohit has that match-winning pedigree, a natural ability that made him one of the most destructive ODI openers of all time.

The discussion further pointed out that Rohit has absolutely zero intention of retiring from ODIs before the World Cup 2027. He wants to prove his doubters wrong in the 50-over mega event, particularly because the entire country of India was heartbroken under his captaincy at home in 2023 after losing to Australia in the final.

However, it would be the BCCI that will take the final call on Rohit Sharma’s selection in India’s squad for World Cup 2027. And to make the matter more spicy, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar, who had doubts over Rohit’s future, did not attend the all-important meeting.

Was Rohit Sharma A Match-Winner In World Cup 2023?

Even though Rohit had only one century in the World Cup 2023, which came against Afghanistan, it was his aggressive strike rate which always set the tone for India.

Thanks to his starts, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer had the luxury of taking the game forward, although the latter had also played in an ultra-aggressive manner at No. 4.

Nevertheless, Rohit had many significant contributions with the bat despite a single century. He had two 80+ scores as well, against Pakistan and England.

Rohit Sharma's Overall World Cup Numbers

Since making his ODI World Cup debut in 2015, Rohit Sharma has been extremely successful with the bat over the years in the competition. He averages 60.57, courtesy of scoring 1,575 runs at a spectacular strike rate of 105.49.

Rohit also has seven half-centuries and six hundreds, of which five came in the same edition in 2019. More significantly, three came in successive matches, against England, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Rohit might be 39 years old, but there is still time to consider whether he can add value to India’s World Cup 2027 squad. However, as things stand, there is little doubt that he can still be the most suitable opener alongside Shubman Gill for the next mega ICC event.
