Known for his brilliance with the ball, Gurnoor Brar produced a sensational fielding effort to dismiss Tom Latham in the first ODI between India and New Zealand at the Eden Park in Auckland. After winning the toss, Indian captain Shubman Gill opted to bowl in the opening encounter of the five-match series.
The decision proved to be a masterstroke as Arshdeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar exploited the seam-friendly conditions, reducing the hosts to 84 for four in 17 overs. Gurnoor got rid of the well-set Tim Seifert before dismissing Tom Latham with a magnificent one-handed grab off his own bowling.
Gurnoor Brar's one-handed catch gets the better of Latham in Auckland ODI
The incident occurred during the 17th over of New Zealand's innings when Latham had just joined Daryl Mitchell in the middle following the departure of Tim Seifert. The BlackCaps had high expectations from Latham, considering he is one of their most prolific performers against India in ODIs.
However, the southpaw found it tough to get going in the Auckland ODI before Gurnoor Brar dismissed him. From over the wicket, Gurnoor bowled a good-length delivery around the off stump.
Latham was caught in two minds, and as a result he could only chip it in the air back towards the bowler. Although the ball was still far away from Gurnoor, the fast bowler showcased remarkable reflexes and grabbed a one-handed catch.
Tom Latham's recent batting slump vs India in a nutshell
There was a time when Tom Latham used to be one of New Zealand's most consistent performers against the Indian team. Between 2016 and 2022, the left-handed batter amassed 846 runs, including two hundreds and five fifties, against India in just 17 ODI innings.
However, the story has been the opposite for Tom Latham since 2023, as India has become his nemesis in the 50-over format. Since the start of 2023, Latham has managed only 61 runs, including five single-digit scores, in eight innings against India. His recent outing in Auckland only worsened his numbers as Latham fell for an 11-ball 3 in the high-octane clash.
