Rohit Sharma, the India batting veteran, has confirmed his 2027 World Cup participation and availability. While it was a no-brainer that the 39-year-old veteran is eager to play in one of the ICC’s most prestigious events, a confirmation from his side further seals the possibility of him featuring in the squad.

While speaking on a reality television show he hosts, “Family Full House With Rohit Sharma,” the cricketer informally hinted at his participation and availability while also teasing a T20 comeback.

Rohit Sharma reveals how he wants to seal his spot for World Cup 2027

Notably, Rohit Sharma has retired from the longest and shortest formats of the game back in 2025. Currently operating only in ODIs, Rohit has averaged 50.33 in the 12 matches he played in 2026. Speaking of his World Cup 2027 chances on the Indian reality show, Rohit jokingly teased captain Shubman Gill too.

"[Shubman] Gill is my captain right now, and I want to play 2027 World Cup so I have to keep him happy,” Rohit said.

After the ICC event tease, Rohit also jokingly remarked that he might wish to make a T20 comeback after 2027 and, hence, he might also have to keep current T20I captain Shreyas Iyer happy too.

“After 2027 World Cup, if I want to make a comeback in T20I, I'll have to keep Shreyas [Iyer] happy. So I need both of them," Rohit added.

How good are Rohit Sharma’s chances for World Cup 2027?

Notably, Rohit’s chances for the World Cup are not slim. Recently, the BCCI dropped a big hint that age would not be a criterion for selection in the squad. That cleared up the path for Rohit, who is nearing his 40s.

Form and consistency will be prioritised, and Rohit Sharma has been one of the most deliverable players in the ODI format besides Virat Kohli.

In ICC World Cups, Rohit averages 60.57 with the bat while having 7 centuries and 6 half-centuries to his name from 28 matches played.

Although Rohit Sharma’s record in South Africa is far below average, his away record speaks for his dominance in foreign conditions. Rohit averages 41.63 in away conditions from 121 matches played.
