Gurnnor Brar suffers injury [Source: AFP]
Just when you thought that the Indian pace batter was injury-free and raring to go, one of the fast bowlers sustained an injury to give a major headache to captain Shubman Gill in the IND Vs ENG 1st ODI at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
The match was poised evenly when Shubman Gill trusted pacer Gurnnor Brar to bowl the 48th over, but right before the fast bowler could start, disaster struck, and an injury happened.
Gurnnor Brar injured, walks off the field
Brar had delivered the goods in his second spell against England, and he was given the responsibility to clean up the English tail. However, the fast bowler immediately clutched his calf as he probably suffered from cramps.
The physio rushed in quickly as Brar was down in pain. Eventually, after careful consideration, the Indian seamer decided not to continue as he walked off the field, with Axar Patel taking over from him in the IND Vs ENG 1st ODI.
The extent of the injury has yet to be revealed, but judging by Brar’s gesture- he clutched his calf- that could mean he might not take any further part in the IND Vs ENG 1st ODI.
Gurnoor's replacement repaid Shubman Gill's faith
With Brar unavailable to bowl, captain Gill had a dilemma as he needed a bowler to deliver the goods in the 48th over. He couldn’t have gone to Bumrah since the champion bowler would have been needed in the last over.
Moreover, the other pacer, Prasidh Krishna, had completed his quota of 10 overs. Hence, the Indian ODI skipper needed someone to replace Brar, and Axar Patel did that to perfection.
Axar started the over with the wicket of Adil Rashid, and then he grabbed the wicket of Josh Tongue as England were dismissed for 258, with Joe Root stranded at the other end, looking helpless.
How Gurnoor Brar performed in IND Vs ENG 1st ODI
This was Brar’s first England tour, and the inexperience was reflected as he was a touch expensive in his first two overs.

Ben Duckett went into ultra-aggressive mode as he took him apart to shatter his confidence. However, Shubman Gill showed trust in his abilities as the captain gave him another over, and he rewarded his captain with the prized wicket of Jacob Bethell.
He then followed it up with the wicket of Ben Duckett as the Indian seamer bagged two scalps in quick succession to rattle the English side.
Brar bowled 9 overs and conceded 61 runs as he took 2 wickets, and had a solid game on his ODI debut in England.
Will Gurnoor Brar be able to take part in the remainder of IND Vs ENG 1st ODI?
Brar has likely suffered a calf injury, and had he been even half-fit, the pacer would have bowled the 48th over of the England innings.
Moreover, the Calf injury generally takes time to heal, depending upon the severity. Brar is one of India’s key bowlers in this format, and the team management might not use him in the innings (while batting), and perhaps India could go in with just 10 players to bat.
