Shubman Gill almost gets injured [Source: AFP]
Virat Kohli once again grabbed attention with his animated on-field reaction during India’s first ODI against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on July 14.
While the match witnessed a brilliant bowling performance from the Indian attack, it was Kohli’s light-hearted teasing of Gurnoor Brar after a dramatic collision with skipper Shubman Gill that became one of the biggest talking points.
Notably, India were asked to field first and made an impressive start with the ball. The visitors struck early to remove Jacob Bethell and Harry Brook cheaply, putting England under immediate pressure.
With wickets falling at regular intervals, former England captain Jos Buttler walked in with the responsibility of stabilising the innings.

However, the memorable moment came on the 1st delivery of the 17th over when Prasidh Krishna dismissed Jos Buttler. Bowling over the wicket, Krishna delivered a short-of-a-good-length ball around the middle stump that shaped away slightly after pitching.
Attempting to flick the ball towards the leg side, Buttler lost his balance and closed the bat face too early. Consequently, the ball took a leading edge and ballooned high into the air, presenting a catching opportunity.
As the ball descended, both Gurnoor Brar and captain Shubman Gill charged towards it. Brar moved to his left from mid-on, while Gill sprinted to his right from mid-off.
For a brief moment, it appeared that the two fielders might collide while attempting the catch. Nevertheless, Brar kept his eyes firmly on the ball, gently nudged Shubman Gill in the process, and safely completed the catch with both hands.

Meanwhile, Buttler’s dismissal proved to be a massive breakthrough for India. The England batter departed after scoring just 5 runs from 14 deliveries, leaving the hosts struggling at 80/4.
Earlier in the innings, Gurnoor Brar had already made an impressive impact by dismissing Jacob Bethell for 14 off 31 balls. He later continued his fine spell by removing the well-set Ben Duckett for 43 from 45 deliveries. Jasprit Bumrah then added to England’s troubles by dismissing Harry Brook for just 1 run.
India’s relentless attack continued as Sam Curran fell for a duck, while Shivam Dube claimed his first wicket by removing Will Jacks for 20 off 19 balls.
At the time of writing, England were attempting to rebuild their innings through Joe Root and Liam Dawson. However, India remained firmly in control with England placed at 108/6, as the visitors looked to restrict the hosts to a manageable total in Birmingham.
