Gautam Gambhir’s right-hand man Ryan ten Doeschate has reportedly expressed his desire in leaving the Indian cricket team. The former Netherlands cricketer has apparently even had talks with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to move on from the ‘Men in Blue’.
It is worth noting that Doeschate is currently serving as the assistant coach of the Indian cricket team. He was appointed for the role by the BCCI a couple of years ago, at the behest of head coach Gautam Gambhir no less.
Travel-weary Ryan ten Doeschate wants to leave Team India
As reported by Cricbuzz, Ryan ten Doeschate is considering to move on from the Indian cricket team. The report also indicates that the former cricketer has already had talks with the BCCI and head coach Gautam Gambhir, and is currently awaiting an approval from the Indian cricket body.
If BCCI agrees to Ryan’s request, India’s ongoing ODI series in England might well be final assignment for the Indian national side.

It is learnt that Doeschate wants to spend more time with his wife and three young sons in London. Owing to extensive travelling commitment required in his assistant coaching role, the former Netherlands player is looking for a less-demanding role, like a coaching gig in the IPL.
The 46-year-old already has an IPL franchise in mind, if certain other reports are to be believed.
Which IPL franchise does Ryan ten Doeschate wants to join?
As reported by Revsportz, Ryan ten Doeschate is exploring the possibility of re-joining the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise for future IPL seasons. However, any shift will only be possible after BCCI greenlights his departure.
With KKR also contemplating a systematic overhaul in its coaching set-up after failing to qualify for the playoffs, Doeschate joining the franchise will represent his second-coming to the team.
Previously, the star all-rounder not only represented KKR for five successive seasons as a player, but he was also named their fielding coach in late-2022. He was part of the KKR coaching set-up alongside then mentor Gautam Gambhir that lifted the IPL 2024 title.
Ryan ten Doeschate’s journey with Team India
Ryan ten Doeschate was named as the assistant coach of the Indian cricket team back in mid-2024 when Gautam Gambhir took over as head coach. Moreover, it was Gambhir himself who suggested Doeschate’s name for the assistant coach role, having previously worked closely with him for multiple seasons with the KKR.
Under his and Gautam Gambhir’s guidance, Team India won the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and the 2025 Men’s T20 Asia Cup, both in the UAE. The Indian cricket team also clinched the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at home earlier this year.
As per reports, Gambhir is not in favor of Doeschate's departure and is trying to convince his trusted aide to continue with Team India.
