By the time Jasprit Bumrah retires, he will arguably go down as India’s greatest-ever bowler across formats. He has been a match-winner for India ever since his international debut in 2016, and in the last 10 years, Bumrah has given countless match-winning performances.
However, it is also to be noted that his illustrious career has been marred by injuries, as time and again, the Indian seamer faces setbacks. He sustained a serious back injury in 2022, but he recovered from the same before the 2023 World Cup.
Since the end of the 2023 ODI World Cup, Bumrah has continued to deliver the goods, but injuries have constantly hampered his career. On Tuesday, he was picked in the India Test squad for the Sri Lanka tour, but his participation is “subject to fitness.”
In this article, we take a look at Bumrah’s entire injury timeline post the 2023 ODI World Cup, and the matches he missed (either due to an injury, or when he was unwell).
Back injury (January 2025)
Bumrah had a serious back injury in 2022, and it took him almost 11 months to make his return to international cricket. He made his comeback in August 2023, and for the next 16 months, Bumrah was injury-free as he focused on his fitness and once again became an integral part of the Indian squad.
The Indian seamer was overutilised during the India tour of Australia (2024-25), as he bowled 151.2 overs, and this took a toll on his body.
On Day 2 of the SCG Test match (January 4), the right-arm seamer sustained a back spasm and also complained of lower back issues. The Indian team took him to the hospital, and he missed the remainder of the Test match as India crumbled and lost the game.
The injury meant that the star pacer also missed India's triumphant Champions Trophy 2025 campaign.
Rest during England Tests (2 Tests in July-August 2025)
Even before the England Test series commenced last year, it was pre-decided that Bumrah would only play in three Tests, as the BCCI wanted to carefully manage his workload.
He played the first Test match and then missed the second game at Edgbaston, Birmingham. He played the third and the fourth Test matches, and went on to miss the series finale at the Kennington Oval.

Rest given in second T20I Vs New Zealand (January 2026)
Right before the T20 World Cup 2026, India played in a 5-match T20I series with New Zealand, and after India won the first game by 48 runs, the management rested Bumrah for the second T20I in Raipur.
He was replaced by Harshit Rana in the playing XI, and his absence was felt heavily as India conceded in excess of 200 runs.
Missed India's T20 WC opener (February 2026)
India played their first match of the T20 World Cup 2026 against the USA, and even before the start of the match, India suffered a jolt as Bumrah was ruled out.
At the toss, captain Suryakumar Yadav stated that the Indian seamer was unwell and he was unable to take part in India’s tournament opener.
Knee injury vs England (July 2026)
For the first time since the 2023 World Cup final, Bumrah was picked in India’s ODI squad (against England), and he played the first two ODI matches before disaster struck.
The pacer sustained a knee injury in the second game of the series, and he was ruled out of the series finale (3rd ODI). The 32-year-old underwent rehabilitation and was picked in the India Test squad for Sri Lanka (subject to fitness).
