Born in Barbados, to a family that lived cricket, Jacob Bethell’s talent to reach greater heights was written on the wall. Having completed his schooling in the Caribbean, he moved to England at the age of 13.

Bethell’s impressive showing in club cricket earned him a scholarship at Rugby School, where the director of cricket and former Warwickshire captain, Mike Powell, guided him. The youngster honed the skills with both the bat and the ball, with a 202 against Marlborough College in Rugby School’s annual two-day fixture being the highlight of his teenage cricket.

Jacob Bethell trained with Warwickshire Club before earning a contract in 2021. The all-rounder’s T20 Blast debut came the next year, the same year when he smashed a 42-ball 88 in the quarter-final against South Africa in the U19 World Cup.

Bethell’s versatility with both bat and ball, as witnessed in the domestic tournaments, was pivotal in landing him an England debut in 2024.

Moreover, Bethell also earned a lucrative IPL contract with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 2024 mega auction in Riyadh. He is set to continue with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for the 2026 IPL season.

Jacob Bethell’s T20I Career

A young Jacob Bethell made his T20I debut for England against Australia on September 11, 2024, at Southampton's Utilita Bowl. The 20-year-old all-rounder impressed immediately, scoring a match-winning 44 off 24 balls in his second match and cementing his place following strong domestic form.

In his only second T20I appearance, Bethell scored 20 runs in an over against an experienced Adam Zampa during the 2nd T20I in Cardiff.

Less than a year into the international setup, Bethell was named England’s T20I captain for the series against Ireland in August 2025. With this, the 21-year-old became the youngest ever player to lead the English side.

Apart from his batting prowess, Bethell played a crucial role in England’s 3-0 T20I series clean sweep over Sri Lanka, with the ball in the stands. In early February 2026, the handy left-arm spinner produced career-best figures of 4/11 in the third and final T20I, taking 4 wickets in eight balls to help England defend 128.

In February 2026, the English batter etched his name in the history books, becoming only the second player from the country to score a half-century on his T20 World Cup debut against Nepal. The knock proved crucial for his country, which narrowly avoided a loss to the associate nation in the coveted tournament.

Later in the tournament, Bethell amassed a brilliant century in the semifinal against India, chasing 254 runs but they lost by 7 runs. 

Jacob Bethell’s ODI Career

Jacob Bethell made his ODI debut for England against Australia on September 19, 2024, at Trent Bridge. A year later, in September 2025, Bethell scored his maiden ODI century against South Africa in the third ODI match, smashing 110 off 82 balls. 

Notably, at 21 years and 319 days, he became the youngest player to score an ODI hundred against South Africa. His innings included 13 fours and 3 sixes, marking his first century in professional cricket.

Jacob Bethell’s Test Career

Jacob Bethell’s exploits with the bat in limited formats earned him a Test debut as the all-rounder was a part of the Three Lions tour to New Zealand for a three-match Test series. Playing his maiden Test on November 28, 2024, Jacob marked a memorable entry to the longest format by scoring 50 not out off 37 balls in the second innings to help secure an eight-wicket victory.

In the series, he scored 260 runs from six innings at an average of 52, England’s second-highest run-getter in the series after Harry Brook.

Further, the 22-year-old Jacob Bethell scored his maiden Test, an unbeaten 142* (from 232 balls), on Day 4 of the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney on January 7, 2026.
