Stepping away from ODIs signals the definitive end of a golden era of a golden era for Indian white-ball cricket.Having already retired from T20Is (after the 2024 World Cup win) and Test cricket (earlier in 2025), ODIs remain Rohit's sole international format, making any hint of an exit carry ultimate retirement implications. That being said, in this article, let’s take a look at Rohit Sharma's rumoured ODI retirement timeline, emphasising all the major events around the same. 1) ODI Captaincy Snub: October 2025In October 2025, BCCI’s decision to replace Rohit Sharma with Shubman Gill as India’s ODI captain immediately triggered intense retirement speculation. Even though Rohit had just led India to an ICC Champions Trophy victory, the leadership change fueled a narrative that the team was moving past him ahead of the 2027 World Cup.2) Australia series in 2025: Late October 2025The Australia tour further fueled retirement talks for Sharma after he was stripped of the ODI captaincy just prior. The former India captain later posted a cryptic farewell message at Sydney Airport, saying, “One last time, signing off from Sydney.”Following his stellar unbeaten century (121*) and winning the Player of the Series award in the final ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground, his airport departure photo on October 26, 2025, led many to interpret it as a career curtain-call rather than just a tour conclusion.3) Home series against South Africa and New Zealand: November 2025- January 2026India played a home ODI series against New Zealand in January 2026 and faced South Africa and New Zealand in previous white-ball cycles, where routine questions about Rohit’s age and future naturally popped up, but they did not trigger the acute behind-the-scenes disconnect seen during the subsequent Afghanistan series and England trip.4) Amid Afghanistan series: June 2026Reports suggest that some members of the selection committee had informed Rohit that they no longer saw him in the scheme of things before the start of the Afghanistan series in June.India head coach Gautam Gambhir was also kept in the loop during the discussions between the selectors and Rohit. Also read: When Will Rohit Sharma Play Next After India vs England ODIs?However, Rohit was selected for the Afghanistan series, as well as the England series, after the former India captain had approached the top brass of the BCCI.5) England 1st and 2nd ODI match failure: July 2026Intense retirement rumours surrounding Rohit Sharma peaked mid-2026 during the England ODI tour.Notably, low scores by Rohit in the first two ODIs against England, scoring 11 off 21 balls at Edgbaston and a slow 26 off 47 balls at Cardiff, triggered media reports that selectors wanted to move on from him ahead of the 2027 World Cup, amplifying retirement rumours before the Lord's match.6) Parents travelled to EnglandFor the unversed, Rohit’s parents, Gurunath Sharma and Purnima Sharma, travelled to London in July 2026 to attend the third and final ODI between India and England at Lord’s. Their travel sparked widespread speculation regarding the veteran batter's future and potential retirement in the format.7) Lord’s ODI slated to be Rohit Sharma’s last Reports had emerged on social media during the second ODI in Cardiff that the series-decider against England at Lord's could be Rohit's final game for India in the format.Amid the chatter, Sharma seemingly addressed the growing speculation surrounding his ODI future, brushing aside the 'outside chatter' ahead of the series decider against England at Lord's.A viral video has been doing the rounds on social media where Rohit can be seen chatting with India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, apparently telling him that the outside chatter does not concern them. The rumours spread like wildfire, until BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia rubbished the claims, saying that the Lord's ODI would not be Rohit's last in the format.8) Rohit Sharma shrugged off retirement chatter after Lord’s 138The Indian opener smashed a brilliant 138 off 110 balls against England at Lord's, slamming the door on retirement rumours. He became the first Indian to hit an ODI century at Lord's and brushed off the speculation, stating that "no noise means no fun" while aiming for the 2027 World Cup.While he might not have played his last game in India colours, Rohit played his last game for India in England. What do the recent reports suggest around Rohit Sharma's ODI retirement?According to recent reports from outlets like Dainik Jagran, members of the selection committee felt sidelined or "betrayed" after the board's public backing of the player contradicted their intended transition phase for 2027.Moreover, Rohit has effectively put the ball in the management's court, meaning he will continue playing unless explicitly dropped rather than stepping away preemptively. Also read: Rahmat Shah To Drop Star Batter?
