Shreyas Iyer replaces Suryakumar Yadav as new T20I captain (Source: AFP)
When India announced Shreyas Iyer as their new T20I captain, the immediate reaction wasn’t about his batting average or strike rate. Instead, the appointment sparked a different debate: What exactly did selectors see in Iyer that made him the preferred leader for India’s next T20 cycle?
After all, India had alternatives. Suryakumar Yadav had already led the side to a historic T20 World Cup 2026 title and had never lost a series in his captaincy career. Younger candidates were emerging. Several senior players possessed better international experience.
Yet the selectors backed the Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer.
That being said, in this article, let’s take a look at Shreyas’ credentials that led the selectors’ decision.
Why Shreyas Iyer Became India T20I Captain: Ajit Agarkar Explains
If there was any doubt about why Iyer got the job, chief selector Ajit Agarkar removed it during the squad announcement.
With regards to Shreyas, we have seen what he has done over the last few years leading different franchises," Agarkar said. “Obviously, won once, finals once, and then probably had a tougher season after a great start. We have seen everything a captain possibly can [show].”
Agarkar’s comments are revealing because they focus almost entirely on leadership rather than batting.

He did mention Iyer’s strong personal performances, but the primary argument centred around captaincy experience, adaptability, and sustained success across different environments.
In many ways the selectors were not choosing India’s most accomplished T20 batter. They were choosing the candidate with the strongest leadership résumé.
An IPL résumé that could not be ignored
If there is one thing that separates Iyer from most leadership contenders, it is the depth of his captaincy experience in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Unlike many international captains who inherit strong squads, Iyer has repeatedly been asked to build teams and create winning cultures.
In platforms like IPL, leaders must manage overseas stars, domestic veterans, young talents, and stay on the same page with a power-packed team management.
Iyer has done this successfully with multiple teams.
At Delhi Capitals, he helped transform a struggling side into genuine title contenders and led them to their maiden IPL final. At Kolkata Knight Riders, he captained the franchise to the IPL title in 2024.
Later, Punjab Kings spent a whopping ₹26.75 crore to acquire his tactical services. And living up to the expectations, he ended their long wait for a playoff breakthrough by taking them to the 2025 final, followed it up with another competitive campaign in 2026.
Selectors saw a captain who had repeatedly entered different environments, earned dressing-room trust, and produced results.

How leading Mumbai helped Shreyas become the leader he is today
Within Mumbai cricket, captaincy is rarely straightforward. The dressing room is filled with international stars, experienced domestic professionals, and emerging prospects competing for opportunities.
Managing that environment requires authority, communication skills, and credibility.
Iyer’s leadership in Mumbai’s domestic setup helped build a reputation as a captain capable of balancing personalities while maintaining performance standards.
Multiple domestic campaigns added to a growing perception that he was not merely a good player who happened to captain teams, but was increasingly viewed as a specialist leader.
Historically, Indian selectors have often valued captains who have already navigated domestic cricket’s demanding leadership structures before taking over the national side.
Some examples are MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly.
Before becoming "Captain Cool" for India, Dhoni developed his aggressive, calculated leadership style while leading Jharkhand and the East Zone in the Duleep Trophy.
Meanwhile, Sourav Ganguly captained Bengal for several seasons, learning to build teams and command respect before taking over the reins of the national side in 2000.
Thus, Iyer fits that pattern neatly.
Shreyas Iyer vs Suryakumar Yadav
Any discussion about Iyer’s appointment inevitably raises another question: why move on from SKY, who has just led India to successful back-to-back titles?
For the unversed, overall, captaincy was never an issue. But it was Suryakumar Yadav's declining numbers in the format for the longest time that appear to have exhausted the patience of the selectors and team management.
Thus, the one area where Shreyas has gone from gently knocking on the door to breaking it is his batting. In 2025 and 2026, he scored over 1000 runs, consistently striking at around 170, the best such phase in his career.
In this period, Shreyas scored at least a half-century whenever PBKS scored over 190 runs, underscoring his importance to their batting.
Shreyas Iyer’s T20I Appointment
Iyer’s appointment was anything but a straightforward captaincy change.
The selectors did not prioritise international captaincy experience alone. Nor did they focus exclusively on batting numbers.
Instead, they rewarded a player who had built a leadership résumé over several years, across franchises, domestic cricket, finals campaigns, title runs, and challenging transitions.
That is the real story behind Shreyas Iyer’s T20I captaincy.
India did not simply choose a successful batter. They chose a captain whose leadership credentials had already been tested across multiple environments and consistently delivered results.
