In a significant development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new captain of India's T20I team on June 6.
The decision was finalised ahead of the announcement of India's squads for the upcoming white-ball tours of Ireland and England.
India will begin their T20I campaign with two matches against Ireland in Belfast on June 26 and 28 before travelling to England for a five-match T20I series from July 1 to 11.
Shreyas Iyer's Leadership Experience
The BCCI selectors have decided to move forward with Shreyas Iyer as India's T20I captain. The 31-year-old batter replaced Suryakumar Yadav, who led India to the T20 World Cup 2026 campaign earlier this year.
Shreyas Iyer brings strong leadership credentials to the role. He guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and has previously led Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to IPL finals.
His batting performances over the last two IPL seasons have also been outstanding. In IPL 2025, the Punjab Kings captain made 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07 in 17 matches.
In IPL 2026, the stylish batter made 498 runs at a strike rate of 168.81 in 14 matches.
It is important to note that Suryakumar Yadav has not only been removed from the captaincy but has also lost his place in India’s squad for the Ireland and England series.

Why Was Shreyas Iyer Picked As India's New T20I Captain?
Speaking about the decision, chief selector Ajit Agarkar made it clear that the selectors wanted a fresh start after the World Cup and believed Shreyas Iyer had earned the opportunity through both his batting and captaincy performances.
Explaining the selection, Agarkar said - "Clean break after WC. We’ve got a bit more time. Shreyas absolutely deserves it. With the bat. Also his performances as captain, having won it once at KKR, couple of really good seasons with PBKS."
"It was unusual he wasn’t part of the T20I squad, but now that he’s found a spot, he has earned it."
Why Was Suryakumar Yadav Removed?
One of the biggest talking points surrounding the announcement was the decision to replace Suryakumar Yadav despite him leading India in the T20 World Cup earlier this year.
Agarkar admitted that it was not an easy decision for the selection committee.
“We debated it a lot, not the easiest discussion especially if you’ve won the WC. At some stage, we would’ve discussed. Shreyas playing as well as he has made the decision easier,” Agarkar said.
The chief selector's comments suggest that the selectors felt it was the right time to make a transition and build a long-term leadership group for the future.
Agarkar also confirmed that the selectors and team management had discussions with Suryakumar before taking the final call.
“I talked to most people, particularly when it comes to a captain who has won the World Cup. We had that chat,” Agarkar revealed.
