On Saturday, Indian cricket witnessed a major development when the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee announced a leadership change in the T20I setup. Suryakumar Yadav, who guided India to a successful T20 World Cup title defense just a few months ago, was removed as captain.

In addition, he was left out of the squads for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, along with the Asian Games.

Suryakumar Yadav Removed As T20I Captain

Notably, the selectors have appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new T20I captain as India begins preparations for the next T20 World Cup cycle. Following this decision, several discussions emerged on social media regarding Suryakumar's future in international cricket.

According to chief selector Ajit Agarkar, the decision was influenced by a combination of recent performances and long-term planning.

Although India retained the T20 World Cup under Suryakumar's leadership, his individual batting numbers were below the high standards he had previously set.

During the T20 World Cup tournament, he scored 242 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 136.72.

Furthermore, his performances since becoming India's full-time T20 captain in July 2024 have shown a decline. His batting average dropped from 43.60 to 25.88, while his strike rate decreased from 168.75 to 152.03.

Moreover, his IPL 2026 season with Mumbai Indians did not produce the expected results. He managed 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54.

False Retirement Rumours Around Suryakumar Yadav Go Viral

Soon after the announcement, a social media post started circulating widely. The post featured a screenshot claiming that Suryakumar Yadav had officially retired from cricket and would no longer be involved in the sport in any capacity.

The answer is no. As of now, Suryakumar Yadav has not announced his retirement from international cricket or from any form of the game. There has been no official statement from the player, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), or any verified source confirming such a decision.

Suryakumar Yadav Reacts To Shreyas Iyer's Appointment

Rather than expressing disappointment, Suryakumar reacted positively to the leadership change. Speaking during the Mumbai T20 League, he congratulated Shreyas Iyer on becoming India's new T20I captain.

"Very happy for Shreyas Iyer. We played a lot of cricket for Mumbai and India together.

Most importantly 3 back to back T20i captains for India from Mumbai now and it it very proud moment for all of us at Mumbai cricket and everyone needs to celebrate that," Surya said.

Meanwhile, Suryakumar continues to remain active in competitive cricket. He is currently leading Triumphs Knights MNE in the Mumbai T20 League. Coincidentally, his side faced Shreyas Iyer's SoBo Mumbai Falcons on the same day the captaincy announcement was made.
