In a massive development, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has decided to bring forward the match start times for the floodlit T20I games against India, which are scheduled for next month.

This latest move has been made by the cricket board to generate higher viewership from India. As the Men in Blue is set to play eight white-ball games from July 1 to July 19, with five T20Is and three ODIs lined up, the evening games in the T20I series were originally scheduled to begin at 6:30 PM local time, which translates to 11 PM IST.

This would have significantly reduced viewership in the land of Men in Blue since that is far too late for many fans to start watching a match, and could have affected television ratings considerably. This has led the think tank of the ECB to advance the timing slots.

England Cricket Board Takes Massive Step To Ignore Own Country Fans

The latest financial report from the ECB revealed that tours involving India are classified as high-value broadcast series. It is a well-known fact that these tours usually generate more revenue than series against most other countries because of the massive television audience.

This has also led to the development that the ECB now expects to make a profit in 2026 because of India's white-ball tour, while it expects a loss in 2027 despite hosting Australia in the Ashes.

What Time Has Been Finalised By The ECB?

The decision to move the start time to 5:30 PM UK time, which is 10 PM IST, could significantly impact viewership since more Indian fans will be able to watch the entire match.

Television ratings are also expected to increase as a result. The change in start times is likely to generate much greater interest in the series, which now has a new captain at the helm for the Men in Blue in the form of Shreyas Iyer.

Notably, tickets for India's tour of England have also proved to be extremely popular, with all three ODIs sold out and only a limited number of tickets remaining for the T20I games.

As Shreyas Iyer takes charge as India's new T20I captain, the series could also provide a stage for a potential debut for 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who smashed records in IPL 2026 with a path-breaking batting display in T20 cricket.

The young sensation has emerged as one of the most talked-about prospects in Indian cricket and could be one of the biggest attractions of the tour if selected in the Playing XI.

How India Affects The Viewership Market?

It is an undeniable truth that India possesses the world's largest cricket audience, and a bilateral series involving the Men in Blue can attract hundreds of millions of viewers across television and digital platforms.

For instance, a regular India T20I match can often draw significantly more viewers than ICC tournament matches involving several other countries.

Hence, broadcasters pay billions of dollars for cricket rights in India, and sponsors are also willing to invest heavily because of the country's massive market.

Why England Bend The Rules Especially For India?

Traditionally, host nations decide match timings based on local fans, stadium attendance, and domestic broadcasting requirements. However, in this case, the commercial benefits associated with the Indian market appear to have been given greater priority.

The dominance of Indian viewership can also be seen on the global stage, where many ICC events are scheduled to suit Indian prime-time audiences, and India matches are frequently allocated the most lucrative time slots.

Countries such as England, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies all earn substantial revenue whenever India tours their shores.

The latest decision by the ECB to alter the start times of the T20I series serves as another example of the immense financial influence that Indian cricket commands worldwide.
