Why Is 7 Called Thala? The Story Behind The Iconic Number

In cricket, only a few numbers carry as much emotion as the number 7. Mention “7” in front of a cricket fan, and chances are they’ll immediately think of one man — MS Dhoni.

Over the years, the number has become synonymous with the former Indian captain MS Dhoni, so much so that fans have created an entire culture around it.

Whether it’s a scorecard, a jersey number, a date, or even a random calculation that adds up to seven, social media is flooded with one phrase: “Thala for a reason.”

But why exactly is 7 called Thala? And how did a jersey number become one of cricket’s biggest pop-culture moments?

What does 'Thala' mean?

The word 'Thala' comes from Tamil and translates to 'leader' or 'chief.'

The nickname was first popularised among Chennai Super Kings fans, where Dhoni has served as captain for most of the franchise’s history. Under his leadership, CSK transformed into one of the most successful teams in IPL history, winning as many as 5 titles (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023), the joint-most in the tournament.

As a result, Chennai supporters began calling Dhoni “Thala” as a mark of respect for his leadership, calmness under pressure, and ability to guide the team through difficult situations.

Over time, the nickname spread beyond Tamil Nadu and became part of cricket culture across India.

MS Dhoni connection with number ‘7’

The connection between Dhoni and the number 7 started long before the internet turned it into a meme.

Dhoni has often revealed that he chose jersey number 7 because he was born on July 7, 1981. Since both his birth month and birth date are the number seven, he developed a personal attachment to it.

At a promotional event, the wicketkeeper batter revealed the secret behind why he chose the particular number.

"That is the time or day my parents decided I would come on earth," MS Dhoni said, cracking up the audience.

Rather than choosing a number based on superstition, Dhoni simply felt connected to it and carried it throughout his international cricket career.

Before Dhoni, the number 7 was universally iconic in football (worn by legends like George Best, David Beckham, and Cristiano Ronaldo), but Dhoni cemented its legendary status within the cricketing world.

Safe to say, what started as a personal preference eventually became one of the most iconic jersey numbers in sports.

How number 7 became a fan favourite

The number gained legendary status because of Dhoni’s extraordinary achievements.

As captain, he led India to victory in the ICC T20 World Cup 2007, the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, and the ICC Champions Trophy 2013.

Notably, no other Indian captain has won all three major ICC white-ball trophies.

As Dhoni’s popularity exploded, fans began associating the number with the Indian legend. Eventually, social media users started jokingly connecting almost everything to Dhoni whenever the number appeared.

A player scoring 70 runs? “Thala for a reason”.

A match ending at 7 PM? “Thala for a reason”.

A random statistic adding up to seven? “Thala for a reason” again.

Most recently, right after the end of IPL 2026, MI captain Hardik Pandya’s cryptic “07:07” Instagram story sparked massive, viral rumours regarding an impending trade from the Mumbai Indians to the Chennai Super Kings.

Was there any CSK-related thing in his story? NO!

But because "7" is the legendary jersey number of CSK icon MS Dhoni and his birthday falls on July 7th (07/07), fans and media widely speculated the post was a hidden message hinting at a major career move.

The joke has become so widespread that it has evolved into one of Indian cricket’s biggest connotations.

When BCCI honoured MS Dhoni’s jersey number 7

In December 2023, reports emerged that the Board of Control for Cricket in India had retired Dhoni’s iconic number 7 jersey from future allocation to Indian players.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially retired the iconic jersey number 7 in December 2023 to honour former captain MS Dhoni and his massive contributions to Indian cricket.

This move, made 3 years after Dhoni announced his international retirement, ensures that no other Indian player can wear the number 7, making it only the second number to be retired in Indian cricket history after Sachin Tendulkar’s jersey number 10.

For many fans, it was a fitting tribute to one of India’s greatest cricketers.

More Than Just a Number

Today, even after years since Dhoni said goodbye to international cricket, seven is more than a jersey number.

It represents an era of Indian cricket. It reminds fans of helicopter shots, impossible run chases, lightning-fast stumpings, and unforgettable trophies.

Most importantly, it represents a player who transformed Indian cricket through his leadership and belief.

That’s why whenever cricket fans see the number seven, they don’t just see a digit. They see MS Dhoni.

And that’s why 7 is called Thala.
