Suryakumar Yadav has been one of India's best ever T20I captains. Under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy, the Indian Cricket Team claimed several accolades, including eight consecutive bilateral series wins, the Asia Cup 2025 and the 2026 T20 World Cup titles.

However, according to recent reports, despite his achievements, Suryakumar is set to be removed as the captain of the Indian T20I side and could also lose his place in the format after nearly 18 months of underwhelming returns.

It is worth noting that during his time in the top role, SKY has had a fair share of fusses for his unique media handling, one of which led to an ICC penalty.

That being said, as Yadav’s captaincy career nears its end, let’s take a look at the top three controversies that surround him.

3. Sanju Samson Fallback in T20 World Cup 2026

During the T20 World Cup 2026, Indian T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav’s bizarre media handling of Sanju Samson’s exclusion from the playing 11 sparked heavy backlash online.

For the unversed, days before a crucial match against the West Indies, Suryakumar was asked during a press conference about bringing the wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson back into the side.

Instead of a direct tactical answer, Suryakumar laughed, smiled, and playfully asked the room who he should drop to fit Samson into the lineup.

This response drew laughs from the media but triggered intense outrage online. Fans heavily trolled Suryakumar, accusing him of being disrespectful to a senior player, especially after Samson went on to hammer an unbeaten 97 to secure a spot in the semi-finals and win the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award.

2. Public Statement on the Indian Army after the win vs Pakistan

Following India’s victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav publicly dedicated the win to the Indian Armed Forces and expressed solidarity with the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack, which took place on 22 April 2025.

In the post-match presentation, he stated: "We stand with the families of the Pahalgam attack victims and dedicate this victory to our Armed Forces for their immense bravery. May they continue to inspire us all."

On top of that, he also pledged his match fees from the tournament to support the families of the victims and the Indian Army.

It is worth noting that, following the incidents, the International Cricket Council (ICC) penalised Yadav for breaching Article 2.21 of the ICC Code of Conduct (conduct that brings the game into disrepute). He was further fined 30% of his match fee along with two demerit points.

1. Handshake row during the Asia Cup 2025

During the 2025 Asia Cup, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav made global headlines by choosing not to shake hands with Pakistan players before and after the matches.

The Indian team management, backed by the BCCI and the Indian government, deliberately chose not to participate in the traditional post-match handshakes. The decision quickly escalated into a major political and cricketing controversy.

Yadav and the Indian contingent cited national sentiment as the reason for the snub. They formally dedicated their Asia Cup victories against Pakistan to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack, expressing solidarity with the families and armed forces.

Following the snub, the Pakistan team lodged an official complaint with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), deeming the refusal to shake hands unsportsmanlike.
