Glenn Phillips notched up his maiden Test century, racing away to a majestic 100 from 135 balls against England on Days 1 and 2 of The Oval Test. The hard-hitting all-rounder clattered 18 boundaries in his counterattacking knock as New Zealand charted a competitive 391 in their first innings.

Through the course of his century, Phillips also joined two former New Zealand opening batters in a rare all-format batting club.

Glenn Phillips rained down 100 runs from 135 balls with 18 boundaries against England. Batting first in the second Test of the three-match series, the 29-year-old arrived to the crease after the dismissal of fellow all-rounder Daryl Mitchell at 188-5 in 52.5 overs on Day 1 at The Oval in London.

Phillips shared 75 runs for the sixth wicket with Tom Blundell, and another 87 runs for the eighth wicket with tailender Kyle Jamieson before becoming the final wicket of the New Zealand innings early on Day 2.

Notching up his maiden Test century, the cricketer has now scored at least one century in each of the three forms of the game, becoming only the third New Zealander in history to do so. He has now joined former ‘Black Caps’ opener Martin Guptill, and England’s current head coach and ex-New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum for the record. Here is a look at all New Zealand batters who have smashed a century across all three formats.

Glenn Phillips charts first ton in 19 Tests

Glenn Phillips made his Test debut back in January 2020 at the SCG during a three-match series in Australia. The cricketer started off with a fighting half-century before getting knocked over by Pat Cummins.

Since then, he has played home Tests against South Africa and Australia, albeit with little success. Even last year against the West Indies, Phillips carted just 47 runs in two innings at an average of 23.50.

His innings against England on June 18 at The Oval marked his maiden Test century, notching up the landmark figure after 32 innings spanning 19 matches.

Jacob Bethell takes three to mop up New Zealand tail

Batting first, New Zealand listed 391 from 96.2 overs at a healthy clip of 4.05 runs an over. Glenn Phillips at number seven scored the lone century of the innings, and wicketkeeper-batter Tom Blundell also made a fiery 51 off 84 balls.

For England, batting all-rounder Jacob Bethell picked up three backend wickets at an expense of just 26 runs. Comeback men Jofra Archer, Matthew Fisher, as well as debutant Sonny Baker picked up two wickets each in the innings.

The hosts reached 15-0 from three overs by the time of lunch break on Day 2.
