Last week, Kane Williamson announced a shock retirement from all forms of international cricket in the middle of New Zealand’s all-important tour of England. This raised a lot of eyebrows, considering he was supposed to be their talisman in this series at number 3.

Having already lost the first Test, the upcoming match at the Oval is a must-win fixture for the visitors to stay alive in the series. They are currently on the lookout for their first series win in England since 1999 and also to avenge the series loss at home last year. To make sure they stay alive in the series, the Kiwis have locked in a new name to slot in at the crucial position.

Kane Williamson’s retirement puts the Blackcaps’ tour in jeopardy

The 35-year-old legendary batter was under 500 runs away from the 10000-run landmark in Tests. Despite his duck and 18 in the first Test, his 110 Test experience could have come in handy to stage a comeback against the hosts, especially because he was technically correct to face the dukes early in the innings.

Now, due to the retirement with immediate effect, Williamson leaves a big hole at number 3, where he had batted in 174 Test innings, averaging 58.83. He is now replaced by Will Young in the squad and Young has already joined the team in England, days ahead of the second Test.

New Zealand lock in Williamson replacement at 3

On the eve of the Test, despite replacing Williamson with Young in the squad, the New Zealand skipper announced that Henry Nicholls will be the preferred option, who will take up the number 3 spot for the next Test.

The experienced Nicholls has been rewarded for his Plunket Shield form, where he top-scored in the competition, racking up 870 runs in 11 innings at an average of 96.66 with three hundreds and five fifties.

“He's [Henry Nicholls'] someone that has a lot of international experience. He's been out of the squad for a couple of years now, but has certainly forced his way back into the squad through weight of runs at domestic level. It's a really exciting opportunity for him to come back into the side in a role at No. 3 that he's been doing for Canterbury back home.”

“For most of his career, he's batted No. 4 or 5. But what he's done for Canterbury over a long period of time, whenever he plays domestic cricket, he always tends to bat No. 3 or 4 as well. I think the good thing with Henry is he's always been able to adapt to situations. This is a really exciting opportunity for him to do something new in Test cricket,” said the skipper.

Henry Nicholls’ record in Tests

So far, he has played 58 Tests and scored 3161 runs at an average of 39.02 with 10 hundreds to his name, but; interestingly, since December 2023, he has only featured in two Test matches against Zimbabwe in 2025. He also scored an unbeaten 150 in his last appearance as well.

Latham vouched for his experience and backed him to do well at 3, while they also had the options of Will Young and Rachin Ravindra, who could bat 3 to replace Kane Williamson.
