Former Brazil Women captain Roberta Moretti has announced her retirement from international cricket. The legendary all-rounder confirmed the same amidst the ongoing 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

It is worth noting that the Brazil Women’s team failed to qualify for the showpiece event in England, by finishing third in last year’s 2025 Women's T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier in Argentina.

Brazil legend steps down from international cricket

Brazil’s trailblazing women’s cricketer Roberta Moretti has announced her retirement from international cricket. Aged 40 and closing in on 41, the legendary bowling all-rounder played 68 T20I matches for the Brazil Women’s team, including six during last year’s 2025 Women's T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier in Argentina.

Sharing an emotional video on Instagram, Moretti said “It has been a long journey. We had a lot of tears but now I feel the moment is right. Since I started playing cricket in 2013, my dream was to represent the Brazilian national team.”

She added “When I started playing for Brazil, my dream was to win championships. When we started winning, my dream turned out to be about not just winning but winning with clear values, a purpose and that we could be better people through sport. I have given this game everything, but cricket gave me more.”

It is worth noting that Roberta Moretti is currently serving as the president of the Brazil Cricket Confederation.

Roberta Moretti to continue work outside the spotlight

The outbound Brazilian cricketer added that she will continue to work for the game on the “other side”, thus giving more opportunities to aspiring players to wear Brazil’s jersey.

She said “I'll continue to work in cricket on the other side, so that more people have the opportunity I had to wear the Brazil jersey, play the sport they love and become better people and leaders so that they can carry Cricket Brazil with the same pride I carried in my heart for years. The most important thing in all of this is that I leave cricket still loving the game.”

Roberta Moretti stats and records

Roberta Moretti made her debut in March 2014, long before Brazil acquired international status. She played her first international match in August 2018 during a South American Women’s Championship game against Mexico Women.

She was also Brazil Women’s first-ever captain, and the most successful one to date, having led the national side to 21 wins in 33 matches with 12 defeats.

Moretti aggregated 1,278 runs with the bat in 62 innings spanning 68 games at an average of 36.51. She is one of only two Brazil women cricketers to have scored over 1,000 runs, and is the highest run-maker from her nation.

With the ball, the right-arm medium pacer scalped 33 wickets in 33 innings and is ranked seventh among Brazil’s all-time highest wicket-takers in international cricket.

She recently played a handful of matches for Brazil at the Kwibuka Women's Twenty20 Tournament, considering her team failed to qualify for the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England
