Glenn Phillips is renowned for taking breath-taking screamers and rippers (game-changing catches). Phillips is a multi-dimensional player who bats, bowls off-spin, fields exceptionally, and keeps the wicket part-time.
Born in South Africa, Phillips moved to New Zealand with his family at the age of 5 and came through the cricket set-up in Auckland. The 1996-born made a mark in professional cricket from an early age due to his hitting abilities.
Philips emerged as a top-order batsman from an early age and a safe gloveman behind the stumps. Having taken giant strides at junior level cricket, Philips made his List A debut in January 2015 in the Ford Trophy and made an immediate impression, showing his hitting prowess. He was also part of the New Zealand squad for the 2016 U-19 World Cup.
He had a sensational debut with the bat in T20s for the Otago Volts in the Super Smash in 2016/17. He stunned everyone with a knock of 116* off 57 deliveries and ended the tournament as the leading run-scorer. Given his abilities with the bat, his transformation to international cricket was pretty smooth as he was fast-tracked into the national T20 side.
Glenn Phillips T20I Career
In February 2017, Glenn Phillips was included in the New Zealand squad for the T20I series against South Africa. Philips made a mark in his 4th encounter in the series when he scored 56 runs off 40 balls.
After being in and out of the international set-up, he returned to New Zealand's T20I side in November 2020, the first T20I series for the side after the COVID-19 pandemic had led to most of their scheduled matches during the year being cancelled.
During the series, Glenn Phillips scored his first T20I century (108 off 46 balls), setting a then-record for the fastest T20I century by a New Zealander, against an innings where he and Devon Conway had a massive partnership, leading NZ to a huge total, with Phillips reaching his century with a six.
He later scored a second T20I hundred in the 2022 T20 World Cup against Sri Lanka (104 in 64 balls).
Phillips has been a part of New Zealand’s squad for the 2024 and 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup tournaments.
Glenn Phillips ODI Career
Glenn Phillips was included in the ODI squad against India in late 2017 but had to wait for his fifty-over debut. He finally played his maiden ODI on 10 July 2022.
The same year, Phillips was named in the squad for the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India. He played in all of the team's matches during the competition, scoring 285 runs as New Zealand reached the semi-final.
The Kiwi all-rounder scored his maiden ODI century, an unbeaten 106 off 74 balls, against Pakistan on February 8, 2025, in Lahore during the Pakistan ODI Tri-series 2025. His explosive innings included 6 fours and 7 sixes, propelling New Zealand to 330/6. A year later, Glenn Phillips scored a brilliant 83-ball century, rescuing his team from 58/3.
Glenn Phillips Test Career
Glenn Phillips made his Test debut for New Zealand against Australia in the third Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on January 3, 2020. Called up as a last-minute replacement, he scored a gritty 50 in his first innings, showing promise despite the challenging conditions.
