Afghanistan won the toss against India in the second ODI and that was the only thing that went right for them on Wednesday. The visitors suffered a drubbing in the first ODI, and a better showing was expected from them in Lucknow as the two sides collided in a riveting battle.

Afghanistan even managed to dismiss Yashasvi Jaiswal early in the innings, and Rohit Sharma also missed out on his fifty as the visitors had a slim chance to get more inroads. However, Rohit’s wicket brought Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill to the crease, and together, they created history.

Ishan Kishan-Shubman Gill create record-breaking partnership

On a flat Ekana Cricket Stadium wicket in Lucknow, Kishan and Gill seized the opportunity as the Afghanistan bowlers had no answer to their onslaught. The pair added 224 runs for the third wicket, and by the time both batters were dismissed, the game had slipped away from Afghanistan’s grasp.

While the pair was batting, India was on the cusp of reaching the 450-run mark as Kishan slammed 125 off 79 balls, and Gill hammered 154 off 110 to break several partnership records.

At one stage, both Gill and Kishan had the chance to reach their second double ton in ODIs, but Kishan fumbled it first, followed by Gill, who both departed in quick succession in the IND Vs AFG 2nd ODI.

Kishan was the chief aggressor in the partnership as he looked in a hurry to reach the 200-run mark. However, after smashing a couple of lusty blows, the left-handed batter was dismissed by playing a rash shot.

He went for a pull-shot, but the Indian batter miscued the shot as the ball went straight into the hands of the deep mid-wicket fielder.

There were plenty of overs left for the southpaw to reach the double century mark, but he let the opportunity go away. In the aftermath of the IND Vs AFG 2nd ODI, Kishan cheekily blamed Gill for his dismissal.

In a video released by the BCCI, Kishan sledged Gill by stating that he urged him to hit six sixes, and that cost him the wicket.

"Shubman Gill was trying to make me hit 6 sixes in an over... and it cost me 70 runs," Kishan said cheekily as he went for the big shot against Afghyanistan and lost his wicket.

Kishan audtions for a place in India's World Cup 2027 squad

At the start of 2026, Kishan was nowhere near any of the Indian squads. However, fast forward six months, and he has become an integral part of the T20I team, and has stamped his authority in ODIs as well.

He was one of the best players for India in the T20 World Cup, and after a stellar IPL 2026, the batter was drafted into the Indian ODI squad for the Afghanistan matches. The results so far have been promising as the batter scored a crucial 34 in the first ODI, and it was followed by a stellar century that helped the Indian team seal the ODI series.

This has helped the left-handed batter become a key part of the ODI squad as he has cemented his place as one of the openers for the World Cup 2027.
