The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will enter IPL 2026 as defending champions for the first time in men’s franchise history. Under the leadership of Rajat Patidar, the team won the IPL 2025 title last year in Ahmedabad by defeating fellow first-time chasers Punjab Kings in a hard-fought final.

Notably, the women’s team of the franchise also lifted the WPL title last month for the second time in the past three editions of the tournament. With three major titles across the men’s and women’s teams in the last two years itself, RCB have well and truly shed their prolonged trophy drought.

On Monday, May 2, the franchise acknowledged its recent success with a celebratory post on social media. Sharing an image of both the IPL and WPL trophies on X, RCB added three stars to the graphic. However, a section of fans mistook it as a reference solely to their IPL triumph and proceeded to troll the franchise for what they believed were two unnecessary additional stars.

Fans troll RCB for adding three stars on trophy post

The RCB franchise shared a celebratory post of its recent success on March 2, i.e., mere weeks prior to the launch of the IPL 2026 season in India. Set to enter the upcoming IPL edition as “defending champions”, the franchise added three stars to its trophy post on social media to signify its IPL success from 2025 and WPL wins in 2024 and 2026.

The primary purpose of the post was to break the news that the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium will continue to serve as RCB's home ground this year. Amidst all the venue drama that has occurred in the past seven months, the franchise wrote "Home of Champions" in the caption of its post.

However, the post sparked a wave of social media trolling from fans, who questioned the franchise for needlessly adding two additional stars in the graphic. Some fans even trolled the RCB franchise for unnecessarily clubbing IPL and WPL titles just to “increase” its trophy count in a bid to match other franchises like Mumbai Indians and CSK.

Bengaluru first team to hold IPL and WPL titles simultaneously

Regardless of ceaseless social media trolling, RCB is the first franchise in Indian T20 history to simultaneously hold both IPL and WPL titles. Under the leadership of Rajat Patidar, the men’s team ended its 18-year title drought by lifting the 2025 silverware last year at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

Even the women’s team, under the leadership of Smriti Mandhana, lifted the WPL 2026 trophy last month by defeating Delhi Capitals Women in a thrilling high-scoring affair.

Rajat Patidar and co. brace up for title-defense in IPL 2026

The men’s team of the RCB franchise is now gearing up to launch its title-defense in the upcoming IPL 2026 season in India. Late last year, the franchise retained the likes of captain Rajat Patidar, zealot Virat Kohli, all-rounder Krunal Pandya, overseas stars Tim David, Romario Shepherd, Jacob Bethell, Josh Hazlewood among several others.

The team management also acquired the likes of England’s Jordan Cox, India U19 star Vicky Ostwal and Vihaan Malhotra. As per a tentative schedule, the IPL 2026 season is slated to commence any day between March 26 and March 28 later this month.
