Bengaluru’s cricket heartbeat is finally back. After months of uncertainty and silence, the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium has got the green signal to host IPL and international matches again. The Karnataka cabinet has cleared the decks, and for Royal Challengers Bengaluru fans, this news is a huge reason to celebrate.
The decision means defending IPL champions RCB could return to their fortress for IPL 2026. But as always in cricket, the final call will still rest with the franchise. Still, the biggest hurdle has now been crossed.
Cabinet gives green signal with conditions
The Karnataka cabinet on Thursday granted permission to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to host matches at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. However, the approval comes with strict conditions based on the Justice Cunha report that was prepared after last year’s tragic stampede.
Karnataka Minister Ramalinga Reddy confirmed the decision and said,
“The cabinet agreed with certain conditions as per the Cunha report. He had mentioned certain conditions in the report, a maximum of 35,000 people, and some other conditions. Accordingly, we have taken the decision.”
That means reduced capacity and tighter safety rules will be the new normal at the venue. Crowd control will now be front and centre, not an afterthought.
From tragedy to tighter safety measures
Last year, Rajat Patidar led RCB's victory celebrations had turned into a nightmare when a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives and injured more than 30 people. The incident shook the cricketing world and forced authorities to hit the pause button on matches at the venue.
Since then, not a single match has been played at the stadium. Even Women’s World Cup 2025 fixtures were shifted out of Bengaluru to Navi Mumbai.
To prevent such incidents in future, the state government formed a committee headed by retired High Court judge Justice John Michael Cunha. The panel submitted recommendations covering immediate, medium-term and long-term safety upgrades.
Safety playbook now in action
Karnataka Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwar confirmed that key recommendations from the Cunha report have already been implemented. He said the government has given in-principle permission after reviewing the progress.
“We have accepted those commitments and given in-principle permission to conduct IPL matches. All measures will definitely be taken before the matches by the organizers,” Dr. Parameshwar stated.
Immediate measures are already in place. Medium-term upgrades like improved gates, better parking systems, ambulance access and coordination with health departments are currently underway. Long-term infrastructure improvements have also been committed within a timeline.
A high-level committee including the GBA Chief Commissioner, Bengaluru Police Commissioner and officials from the Health, PWD and Fire departments has reviewed the arrangements and certified that matches can be conducted safely.
RCB’s fortress ready for comeback
With IPL 2026 scheduled to begin in March, the timing of the approval couldn’t have been better. RCB, fresh off their title win, will be keen to defend their crown in front of their passionate home crowd.
Chinnaswamy has always been RCB’s 12th man. The loud chants, sea of red and electric atmosphere often turn matches into a festival. If everything goes as planned, Bengaluru fans could soon witness cricket returning to their beloved stadium.
Conclusion
This decision feels like a balanced one. Cricket belongs at the Chinnaswamy, but not at the cost of fan safety. The government has taken its time, studied the report and ensured changes are happening on the ground.
If these measures are followed properly, the stadium can once again be a fortress of noise and passion without risking lives. Because at the end of the day, the game is nothing without the fans in the stands.
