The T20 World Cup 2026 has reached its final stages, with India set to take on England in the semifinal clash on Thursday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In the other semifinal, South Africa will take on New Zealand at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

The Suryakumar Yadav-led side registered a dominant win over West Indies in the do-or-die match on Sunday, to book a berth in the semis after a thumping by South Africa in the Super 8 stage. In the must-win Super 8 match, India chased down West Indies’ 195 at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Riding on Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 97, the Men in Blue went past the humongous target with 4 balls to spare. In this pursuit, India recorded their highest run chase in the T20 World Cup history.

While the entire cricketing fraternity eagerly awaits the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal encounters, concerns about the weather remain a topic of discussion. With fans wondering what will happen if the games are washed out.

What happens if rain washes out the T20 World Cup 2026 semi-finals?

In case rain washes out the match between India and England or South Africa and New Zealand, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has scheduled a reserve day. Moreover, if the match is delayed, officials will grant an additional 90 minutes on the day after the fixture and 120 minutes on the day after that to ensure at least a five-over match takes place.

For instance, if the match between India and England on Thursday is affected by rain, 90 minutes will be added on the day of play and 120 minutes to the reserve day, i.e. Friday.

This contingency plan is in place to prevent disruption from unforeseen weather conditions during this crucial encounter.

What if the match gets abandoned?

Notably, if the India-England semifinal match or the South Africa vs New Zealand match is abandoned, the result will be determined by the Super 8 points table.

In such a case, England would advance to the final, having topped their Super 8 group with three wins, while India finished second with two wins.

If both semifinals are abandoned, South Africa and England will progress to the T20 World Cup final.

India and England meet again in a T20 World Cup semi-final

The upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 clash between India and England in Mumbai continues a compelling semi-final story.

It is noteworthy that in 2022, England ended India’s campaign at the stage before the final and eventually beat Pakistan to lift their second trophy. Two years later, the tables turned when Rohit Sharma-led India defeated England in the 2024 semi-final and carried that momentum into the final against South Africa in Barbados.

The thrilling story is once again unfolding with India meeting England in the 2026 semi-final. The defending champions, India, are coming off a great win against West Indies in the virtual quarterfinal. On the same note, Harry Brook-led England outsmarted New Zealand in the final T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 clash in a thrilling encounter.
