In a significant development, India won the toss and elected to field first against West Indies in a virtual knockout clash that will decide their fate in the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal race. The major headline from the toss at Eden Gardens was India’s unchanged XI from the Zimbabwe game, meaning no place once again for Rinku Singh in the must-win encounter.
Rinku Singh, who recently suffered the loss of his father, had rejoined the squad after completing the final rites, underlining his commitment to the national side. However, the team management chose to stick with continuity from the Zimbabwe playing XI, in a high-pressure fixture. Whether the call stands justified tactically is a debate for later, but emotionally, it has stirred strong reactions.
On X, formerly known as Twitter, fans appeared divided. While some defended the think tank’s practical approach in a do-or-die game, many expressed empathy for the left-handed finisher during such a tough time. Support poured in for Rinku Singh throughout the platform alongside the criticism of the management that gathered pace before the game began.

Rinku Singh Snub Draws Emotional Response From Fans
Fans online did not hold back after Rinku Singh was left out from India's playing XI against West Indies. Many questioned why he was called back into the squad if he was not going to feature in the XI, saying he could have stayed with his family during such a difficult personal time. The emotional angle dominated early reactions online.
Several supporters shared heartfelt messages after spotting him during the national anthem, wishing him strength and backing him publicly. At the same time, others warned that India might realize his true value only if the chase gets tight, stressing that proven finishers are built for high-pressure moments like these.
A section of fans also took subtle digs at head coach Gautam Gambhir, calling the decision a gamble. Some argued Tilak down the order against a strong bowling attack remains untested, especially in crunch games. A few even labelled it a potential blunder, particularly with Rinku available and familiar with home conditions.

Rinku Singh’s Snub a Tactical Call or Risky Gamble?
The absence of Rinku Singh from India’s XI against Zimbabwe was seen as a tactical move, and the same call has now been repeated against West Indies. The management has chosen continuity over change, backing the same combination that worked previously instead of bringing back a specialist finisher in a crucial game.
Against Zimbabwe, Tilak Varma played Rinku’s role perfectly, smashing an unbeaten 44 off 16 to power India to a match-winning total. That knock justified the decision on that day. From a practical point of view, sticking with a winning XI in high-pressure matches gives stability and avoids unnecessary disruption in team roles.
At the same time, many feel replacing a player like Rinku is not that simple. He has been India’s best pace-hitter down the order for some time now. Even though he has had a quiet T20 World Cup, the entire Indian batting line-up has struggled, so isolating his form alone does not tell the full story.
There is also the argument that Rinku was not used properly in this tournament. He was sent early against the USA and did not get many chances to play his natural finishing role, including in the Super 8 defeat against South Africa. So leaving him out again in a do-or-die clash raises questions. Only time will tell if India misses his finishing touch or not.
