Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza scripted a unique record for himself as he competed against South Africa in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026. He hit 73 runs with the bat and also took a three-wicket-haul which put him in the elite company of legends.

Raza fought for his team when Zimbabwe had nothing to lose. His half-century put Zimbabwe in a strong position. But despite his valiant all-round efforts, his team couldn’t get through the finish line.

Sikandar Raza enters elite list featuring Bravo, Watson

Batting first, Zimbabwe lost 5 wickets with just 87 runs on the board. But skipper Sikandar Raza wasn’t ready to give up. He hammered 73 off 43 balls and stitched multiple crucial partnerships to guide his team to a respectable total of 153 runs.

With the ball, Raza was equally lethal. He removed Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock and Dewald Brevis to slow down South Africa. Sikandar completed his spell with 3 wickets and conceded just 29 runs.

With this all-round performance, Sikandar Raza became only the fifth player to score 50+ and 3+ wickets in an innings in the T20 World Cups.

Players to Score 50+ and 3+ Wickets in an Innings in T20 WCs:

  • Dwayne Bravo (West Indies) vs India, Lord’s, 2009 (66* Runs & 4/38)
  • Shane Watson (Australia) vs Ireland, Colombo (RPS), 2012 (51 Runs & 3/26)
  • Shane Watson (Australia) vs India, Colombo (RPS), 2012 (72 Runs & 3/34)
  • Marcus Stoinis (Australia) vs Oman, Bridgetown, 2024 (67* Runs & 3/19)
  • Roston Chase (West Indies) vs South Africa, North Sound, 2024 (52 Runs & 3/12)
  • Sikandar Raza (Zimbabwe) vs South Africa, Delhi, 2026 (73 Runs & 3/29)

He joins legends like Dwayne Bravo, Shane Watson and Roston Chase, who previously achieved this feat during various T20 World Cup editions.

Sikandar Raza disappointed after Zimbabwe’s loss

Despite being on the losing side, captain Sikandar Raza was awarded the player of the match trophy. However, he remained humble and admitted feeling strange.

"My immediate reflection is that I shouldn't be here. I've never got a man of the match for losing the game, but I just think I can hold my head high," Raza said.

Sikandar Raza acknowledged that Zimbabwe suffered heavy defeats earlier in the tournament, but he sees those losses as learning experiences.

"I think the way the boys have played the whole tournament, I know we took a bit of beating in the previous two games, but I think with each beating came a valuable lesson. And if you can see Zimbabwe, I think we have improved with every game that we have played," he added.

He believes Zimbabwe now understands what it takes to compete consistently at the highest level and move towards being a solid “mid-table” team, meaning regularly finishing among the top 6 or 7 sides globally instead of being underdogs.

"At least now we've got a taste of what it takes and what it needs to be done for us to be a mid-table team in the top 6, top 7. We take these valuable lessons, go home, and hopefully come back stronger and better."

Zimbabwe remain winless in Super 8

Meanwhile, despite Sikandar Raza giving his 100% as a captain, batter and bowler, Zimbabwe couldn’t cross the finish line. Dewald Brevis scored 42 off just 18 balls in the 154-run chase to put the Proteas in the driver’s seat.

George Linde added 30 off 21 balls as South Africa completed the chase in 17.5 overs to seal a 5-wicket victory.

Zimbabwe were already eliminated from the tournament, and hence they had nothing to lose. Yet, they were denied a moral victory as they finished their Super 8 campaign without a single victory.

Having out-beaten Australia before in the Group Stages, Zimbabwe’s confidence was high coming into the Super 8 stage. However, the competition in Group 1 was too tough for them to get past.
