Indian cricketer Rinku Singh showed great strength and dedication as he reached Kolkata only a few hours after performing the last rites of his father. Despite going through deep personal pain, he joined the Indian team ahead of their crucial ICC Men's T20 World Cup match against the West Indies on Sunday.
Rinku Singh arrived in Kolkata on Saturday morning. This happened just hours after he completed his father’s funeral rituals on Friday evening.
What happened to Rinku Singh’s father?
Rinku’s father, Khanchand Singh, passed away on Friday morning due to stage four cancer. He had been suffering from serious health problems for some time. He was admitted to Yatharth Hospital in Greater Noida on February 21 after his condition became worse. Doctors placed him on ventilator support, but sadly, he passed away in the early hours of Friday.
After his death, his body was taken back to Aligarh, their hometown in Uttar Pradesh. According to reports, a large number of people gathered to pay their final respects. Rinku performed all the funeral rituals in Aligarh as part of the traditional last rites.
Earlier, Rinku had been by his father’s side when his health became critical. However, he had briefly returned to the Indian squad before the match against Zimbabwe at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Although he was part of the team, he was not included in India’s playing XI. Instead, Sanju Samson was chosen to open the batting along with Abhishek Sharma.

Rinku Singh's performance in T20 World Cup 2026
So far in the tournament, Rinku Singh has played five matches and scored 24 runs. He usually comes in to bat towards the end of the innings, which means he often has very few balls to face. In total, this year he has played 10 T20Is and scored 115 runs at an average of 28.75, with a strike rate of 132.18.
Although he did not play against Zimbabwe, he might get a chance in the upcoming match at Eden Gardens, which is also his IPL home ground.
It is important to note that the match between India and the West Indies is extremely important. The winner will move to the semifinal along with South Africa. However, if the match is washed out due to rain, things could become complicated.
In that case, the West Indies would qualify because they have a better Net Run Rate. Currently, India’s NRR is -0.100, while the West Indies have a much better NRR of +1.791.
