Delhi Capitals (DC) will take on the five-time IPL champions, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), in their next IPL 2026 match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi tonight, Tuesday, May 5.

With the season approaching its business end, Axar Patel would hope to have all his match-winners in full health and match-ready.

That being said, in this article, let’s explore whether the Capitals’ trusted bowler, Lungi Ngidi, will play in the DC vs CSK IPL match today.

What happened to Lungi Ngidi?

South African pace ace Lungi Ngidi suffered an unfortunate head injury while fielding the third over of DC’s afternoon game against Punjab Kings on April 25 and was rushed to BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, Pusa Road, in an ambulance via a green corridor created by Delhi Police.

Under ICC regulations, a mandatory seven-day stand down applies to players diagnosed with a concussion. Even though the IPL 2026 Playing Conditions did not explicitly state it, Ngidi had to serve the rest period after being discharged from the hospital that evening, with scans revealing no major concerns.

Delhi Capitals’ bowling coach gives major update on Ngidi’s availability

On May 4, Delhi Capitals bowling coach Munaf Patel confirmed that fast bowler Lungi Ngidi has cleared the mandatory concussion stand-down period and is ‘100 percent fit’.

Patel further emphasised that Lungi is available to return to action ahead of the side’s crucial clash against the five-time champions Chennai Super Kings.

“All bowlers are fit and Lungi is 100 percent fit because he didn't play two games because of the six-day criteria. But he's a hundred percent fit now,” said Munaf in the pre-match press conference on Monday.

As understood from Munaf Patel’s remark, Ngidi has fully recovered and is match-ready. However, his inclusion in DC’s playing 11 would be a tough call for the management. As Kyle Jamieson stepped up well in his absence, he is looking too lethal when paired with Mitchell Starc.

How can DC qualify for IPL 2026 Playoffs?

As of today, DC has 8 points from 9 matches, making the road to 16 points a "must-win" scenario for most of their remaining matches.

To qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs, Delhi Capitals likely need to win at least four of their remaining five matches to reach 16 points, as they are currently on eight points from nine matches with a poor Net Run Rate (NRR).

Relying on other results, such as GT, CSK, and RR losing matches, is necessary.

DC's Qualification Scenarios for 2026 Playoffs:

  • Required Wins: DC must aim for 4-5 wins in their final 5 matches to secure 16-18 points, which generally guarantees a top-four spot.
  • Net Run Rate: Due to a poor NRR (-0.895), winning with high margins is crucial to gain a competitive advantage over rivals if they finish on the same points.
  • Result Dependence: DC needs other mid-table teams, specifically Gujarat Titans (GT), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), to lose their remaining matches, as their qualification hangs in the balance with 16 points or superior NRR.
  • Crucial Matches: The campaign is difficult; 4 wins from the last 5 games are required to avoid elimination.
