The Delhi Capitals IPL 2026 playoffs qualification scenario became more complicated after their shocking defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Delhi Capitals had a forgettable outing against RCB, as the Rajat Patidar-led team thrashed them by nine wickets in the 39th group-stage match of the IPL 2026.

After being asked to bat first, the Capitals suffered a horrible batting collapse, being bowled out for 75 runs. In response, RCB chased the target in just 6.3 overs, with Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal playing scintillating, unbeaten knocks.

Delhi Capitals register 5th defeat in IPL 2026

Led by Axar Patel, DC registered their fifth defeat in the group stage of the IPL 2026 as they went down against the Royal Challengers. They had a promising start to the season, securing convincing wins over LSG and Mumbai Indians.

However, a one-run defeat to Gujarat Titans scripted the downfall of the Delhi-based franchise. They further went on to lose crucial matches against CSK, SRH, Punjab Kings and RCB, significantly complicating the Delhi Capitals IPL 2026 playoffs qualification scenario.

As Axar Patel and his troops stare at an embarrassing group-stage elimination, here we explain the Delhi Capitals IPL 2026 playoffs qualification scenario.

Delhi Capitals IPL 2026 playoffs qualification scenario explained

  • Win at least five of the remaining IPL 2026 matches.
  • Expect GT, CSK, and RR to finish with fewer than 16 points.

DC have played eight matches and are set to feature in six more games before concluding the group stage. They will take on the Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders twice, besides locking horns with CSK and PBKS.

To qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs, the Capitals must win at least five out of their remaining group-stage matches in the competition.

As things stand, they are placed seventh on the IPL 2026 points table with three wins in eight matches.

While Punjab Kings, RCB and SRH seem all set to enter the next round, Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals and CSK could be DC's biggest competitors in the IPL playoff race.

Therefore, the Capitals wouldn't want any of these teams to breach the 16-point mark in the group stage. So, apart from winning their matches, DC would like these teams to lose most of their upcoming matches.

However, if two or more teams end up with 14 points, the fourth side for the IPL playoffs will be decided by the Net Run Rate.

Considering Delhi Capitals have the second-worst NRR (-1.060), they would be looking forward to beating their opponents by massive margins.

On the other hand, the Delhi Capitals IPL 2026 playoffs qualification scenario will be further dented if they lose two or more matches going forward.

IPL playoffs: A distant dream for DC since 2021

Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings are two of the most prominent teams that have never won an IPL trophy.

While the Kings have evolved their performance under Shreyas Iyer's leadership, the Capitals' graph has only gone downhill since Axar Patel's appointment as the captain.

Delhi Capitals' last playoff qualification dates back to 2021, when they played the second Qualifier. However, the IPL trophy still remained elusive for them, as KKR pipped them by three wickets and eventually finished the competition as the runners-up.
