Rohit Sharma in action for MI [Source: AP]
Fondly known as 'Mumbai Cha Raja' [The King of Mumbai], Rohit Sharma returned to action for the first time since April 12, as the Mumbai Indians took on the Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium. The former MI skipper had missed the last few matches with a hamstring injury, which significantly jolted their season.
However, upon his return, he was once again in his classic midas touch at his backyard in Mumbai, as he brought up his second fifty of the season, scoring 84 off 44. Despite missing out on what could have been a thoroughly deserved century, Rohit Sharma made sure his team was in a good position to clinch the match, while also reaching a significant personal landmark.
Rohit Sharma reaches another personal milestone
As the Mumbai Indians hosted the Lucknow Super Giants in a battle of survival, the visitors posted a formidable first-innings total of 228/5 and asked MI to chase a record total to win the match. Previously in IPL 2026, MI chased down 224 against KKR at the same venue, which was their highest total chased in IPL history.
As Rohit Sharma took to the field alongside Ryan Rickelton on the night, he batted like he was never injured and out of the team. In his blistering 85 (44), he scored 6 fours and 7 sixes — previously he had never hit more sixes in an IPL innings, meaning he broke his record of six sixes created back in 2013.
Most sixes by Rohit Sharma in an IPL innings
4. 6 sixes - 76*(45) vs CSK, Wankhede, 2025
5. 6 sixes - 78(38) vs KKR, Wankhedem 2026

Mumbai Indians fight for survival in IPL 2026
Following Rohit Sharma's wicket 177 after 14 overs, the remainder of the batting lineup, led by the cameos from Naman Dhir and Will Jacks, chased down the 229-run total with 8 balls remaining in the match.
The 143-run partnership between Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton on the night was their second century partnership of the season — both coming at the Wankhede. Previously, when they faced KKR in their season opener, they racked up 148 runs for the first wicket in 11.5 overs, resulting in a win.
As they chase down their record total in IPL, they now have 6 points on the table after 10 matches played. While their destiny does not lie in their hands, they are still mathematically alive in the tournament with 4 matches remaining.
Mumbai Indians eye big wins on the road
Up next, the Men In Blue will play three consecutive matches away from home, starting with the big game against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur on May 10, followed by the Punjab Kings in Dharamsala on May 14 and the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on May 20.
The results on the road will decide their future in the tournament before they eventually end the league phase at home against the Rajasthan Royals on May 24.
