Shubman Gill was set and had his eyes set on a Test century in Sri Lanka, but right after reaching the half-century mark, the Indian captain was dismissed by Asitha Fernando. The wicket was flat, and Gill had done the hard work before Fernando’s delivery caught an outside edge, with the keeper taking a sharp catch.
It was a good-length ball outside off stump as Gill went for a cut shot, but he paid the price as the Indian captain was sent packing for 50 off 108 balls, and Fernando produced an animated celebration as he took Yashasvi Jaiswal’s revenge on Gill.
How Fernando took Jaiswal's revenge on Shubman Gill
Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was going strong at 45 off 53 before disaster struck. Fernando went a tad fuller as Jaiswal, with tentative feet poked at the delivery. The ball jagged back in sharply to take the inside edge as it crashed onto the stumps.
Fernando brought an animated celebration as Jaiswal walked back disappointed. However, he exchanged some heated words with Sri Lankan cricketers, and Fernando, too, was involved in it as he and Jaiswal were almost involved in a physical altercation.
The umpires intervened, and the two players had to be separated. Post the Jaiswal wicket, the Sri Lankan pacer was more charged up, and when he trapped Gill, he showcased all his emotions as he gave a fiery send-off. It was Almost as if he channeled all that anger and unleashed it after dismissing Gill.
Will Fernando be fined by ICC for excessive celebration?
Under the ICC guidelines, a physical altercation between two players is a big no, and anyone involved will be punished by the governing body.
According to ICC regulations, acts of violence like kicking, punching, or fighting during an international match, as well as physical assault that results in bodily harm or injury, are only included in Level 4 offences.

Article 2.18 of the ICC Code of Conduct stated that "Physical assault of another Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person during an International Match."
Under the Level 4 offence, anyone found guilty will receive a ban of between 5 Test Matches or 10 ODI matches.
Moreover, Asitha Fernando was also involved in excessive celebration after Gill's wicket, and according to the ICC Code of Conduct, the gesture falls into Article 2.5 which prohibits using language, actions, or gestures that disparage or could provoke an aggressive reaction from a dismissed batter.
This is a Level 1 offence, and Fernando can also be fined 50% of his match fee under the Code of Conduct.
Indian players who have been fined by ICC for physical altercation
Not only Fernando but Jaiswal could also face the ICC’s wrath, and he, too, was involved in the altercation. Hence, once the Test match is over, the governing body could also take action against the Indian opener.
Similarly, during the 2024-25 BGT between Australia and India, Virat Kohli was involved in a heated fight with Sam Konstas, and he bumped shoulders with the 19-year-old Aussie debutant.
The incident wasn’t ignored by the ICC, as the legendary Indian batter was fined 20 percent of his match fee and was handed one demerit point for breaching the Code of Conduct.
Similarly, in 2008, the former India batter and current head coach, Gautam Gambhir, appeared to deliberately elbow Watson while running between the wickets. The incident led to outrage, with Australian players claiming it was intentional.
The ICC found Gambhir guilty, and the player was found guilty of a Level 2 offence and handed him a one-Test suspension.
