India’s Test captain Shubman Gill made history on Sunday (August 23) in the second Test of a two-match series in Sri Lanka, taking place at Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo. The 26-year-old, who is also India’s ODI captain, did something with the bat that no player in the world has achieved.
Playing in his 43rd match, Gill now has more than 3,000 Test runs, laced with 11 centuries and 8 half-centuries. He made his Test debut in December 2020, against Australia at the MCG.
His ODI debut, however, came in January 2019, against New Zealand in Hamilton. Thus far, he has 3379 runs in the format after 67 matches.
Of them, 63 innings came from Gill in this decade. Since then, the 26-year-old has tallied 3,330 runs in the 50-over format, averaging 62.8 at a strike rate of 101.6.
Gill Becomes Decade's 1st Player With 3000 Runs In Tests & ODIs
On Sunday, Shubman Gill became the first player in the world to have 3000 runs in both Tests and ODIs in this decade. Even Harry Brook, often lauded as the best player of this generation, is yet to achieve the exclusive feat.

Gill had two failures in Galle during the first Test of the two-match series, having made 16 and 8 runs respectively. Prabath Jayasuriya had him in his pocket on both occasions.
However, on Sunday, he is batting well, remaining not out on 34*, as India are on 126/4 after 35.5 overs. Devdutt Padikkal, who was named the Player of the Match in Galle, is on 28*.
Shubman Gill Overall Test Numbers
Despite having a spectacular Test debut, Shubman Gill had pretty much average numbers in Tests. He had 478 Test runs in 2021, averaging 29.87 after 17 innings. In 2022, he had only 178 runs across six Test innings.
In 2023, he could only manage 258 runs in 10 Test innings for India before beginning to improve his numbers in Tests for future.

How Many Centuries Does Gill Have Across Formats?
So far, Gill has 11 centuries in Tests, as mentioned before. Besides, he has 9 ODI centuries in 67 ODIs and even one T20I century after 36 outings.
In terms of First-Class Cricket, Shubman Gill has 20 centuries in red-ball cricket after 72 outings. In List A cricket, he has notched up 15 centuries after 121 games, while seven hundreds came in the T20 format after 191 matches.
When it comes to IPL, Gill, Gujarat Titans captain, has been extremely consistent with the bat in hand. He averages 40.33 in the competition, with 4598 runs after 131 innings. Moreover, he has 5 centuries and 32 half-centuries in the IPL history.
