R Sai Kishore was the talk of the town in Cheltenham as he ripped through the Worcestershire batting lineup in the County Championship, pulling Gloucestershire back into the match.

The overseas professional from India is currently on his second County Cricket stint, having already represented Surrey last year in July. He has signed a six-match deal with Gloucestershire for the remainder of the season and has had an immediate impact with a Shane Warne-esque delivery against Worcestershire.

Sai Kishore recreates Shane Warne’s iconic Ball of the Century

Bowling in his first County Championship match of the season, R Sai Kishore was at 3/76 when he took on the Worcestershire captain Brett D’Oliveira on Day 2 afternoon. As the opposition skipper was eyeing a hundred and stretching his team’s lead of 117 runs, Sai Kishore came in for his 31st over of the innings.

Having already picked three wickets, Sai Kishore bowled a delivery from over the wicket, drifting away from the batter’s leg stump. As D’Oliveira looked to reach the pitch of the full-ish ball, he was taken aback by the amount of turn it received from way outside leg.

The ball was around the fifth stump outside leg stump and went all the way to rattle the bails on the off stump. This immediately reminded everyone of the famous Shane Warne to Mike Gatting delivery at Old Trafford in the 1993 Ashes series.

On his first Ashes delivery in England, Shane Warne bowled a similar delivery outside leg, which turned sharply to dismiss Mike Gatting for 4(13). It was later termed ‘The Ball of the Century’ by the cricketing fraternity. Shane Warne went on to take a whopping 128 more Ashes wickets in England in the 22 Tests.

Why is Sai Kishore not playing Duleep Trophy?

India’s long domestic season kick-started on Sunday, August 23, morning as the two quarter-finals of the Duleep Trophy are being played at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. However, Sai Kishore, despite an experience of 54 FC games and 223 wickets, is not a part of the South Zone squad.

Sai Kishore usually leads Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket, but the Duleep Trophy teams are picked on the basis of previous season’s Ranji Trophy performances.

Firstly, due to injury issues, Sai Kishore only picked 20 wickets in 9 innings last season, and Tamil Nadu finished 6th on the Elite A table, as an hurting any chances of making it to the South Zone squads.

Can Sai Kishore’s County Cricket exploits earn him an India call-up?

The 29-year-old left-arm orthodox bowler is a seasoned red-ball bowler in First-Class cricket, which has helped him earn a County contract in consecutive seasons.

In the 2025 County Championship, he represented Surrey in two matches, where he bowled decently, picking 11 scalps. Now, he has already picked 4/76 in his first innings of the season and has a substantial amount of time to make a big impact on Gloucestershire’s season, as they are 6th on the Division Two table.

With over 200 FC wickets at a good average of 24.21, alongside decent batting and age still on his side, Sai Kishore can make a case for himself to potentially replace Ravindra Jadeja in the coming years.

While Manav Suthar and Harsh Dubey are making a name for themselves, the newest debutant, Saransh Jain’s selection at 33 can be a good motivating factor for Sai Kishore.

As things stand, he is far back in the pecking order, especially having missed out on the Duleep Trophy, but after an injury layoff, he is back and would like to perform consistently and earn a call-up in the next few years.
