The Afghanistan team might have just taken one of the worst DRS reviews in recent memory, doing so against India on Day 2 of their one-off Test. After missing three golden opportunities earlier in the innings, a desperate Afghanistan side eventually took a review in the 120th over of the Indian innings against number nine Mohammed Siraj.

The incident occurred when Siraj attempted to slog sweep Afghanistan spinner Nangeyalia Kharote. Several close-in fielders heard a sound instead, prompting Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi to take DRS for a possible caught-behind.

The television replays ended up showing a daylight difference between bat and ball, as the visitors wasted away a crucial review in the innings.

Afghanistan takes needless review against Mohammed Siraj

Afghanistan spinner Nangeyalia Kharote and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi took a chance at a review, a needless one no less, against India’s number nine batter Mohammed Siraj in the 120th over of the innings on Day 2.

While several close-in fielders believed Siraj had nicked the ball, there was a daylight difference between the ball and the edge, prompting the third umpire to adjudge him ‘not out’.

To make matters worse for Afghanistan, Mohammed Siraj launched a huge six and successive boundaries off the next three deliveries against Kharote.

Afghanistan seemingly boycotts DRS with three brain fades

Interestingly, prior to the Mohammed Siraj incident, Afghanistan players missed three golden opportunities of dismissing Indian batters by refusing to take a review.

On Day 1, the visitors granted Indian opener KL Rahul a lifeline early in the innings. Refusing to take a review for a clear caught-behind, Afghanistan players bore the brunt of their mistake as Rahul went on to score a regal century.

The following day, the visitors missed taking two more reviews before lunch, that against both overnight batters Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant.

Saleem takes six, India mount 564-8d

Team India ended up mounting 564-8d in 127 overs after winning the toss and opting to bat first. While fast bowler Mohammad Saleem dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal early in the game for just 24 off 32 balls, KL Rahul and number three Sai Sudharsan crafted a 139-run partnership for the second wicket.

Sudharsan belted 81 runs off just 104 balls with 13 cracking boundaries in New Chandigarh, and Rahul composed 100 from 165 deliveries with 11 fours. Captain Shubman Gill also reached his century at number four to take India to 368-3 by stumps on Day 1 alongside wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant.

Pant blasted 81 runs from 121 balls with six boundaries and three huge sixes and Gill top-scored in the high-scoring innings with an elegant 126 off 177 balls.

Washington Sundar also bludgeoned a fiery half-century lower down the order to slap 52* off 68 balls. Debutant Manav Suthar and number nine Mohammed Siraj made crucial 20s to finish off the innings.

For Afghanistan, Saleem picked up six wickets to claim industrious figures of 6-140 in his 27 overs. Ziaur Rahman and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi also chipped in with a wicket each.
