Suryakumar Yadav has been officially sacked as India’s T20I captain by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Even though the 35-year-old recently led the Indian team to T20 World Cup glory, the senior batter was removed from the team owing to his form concern with the bat.

While announcing India squads for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, the BCCI selection committee named Punjab Kings skipper and fellow senior pro Shreyas Iyer as new national T20I captain.

Making his first public appearance since his removal from captaincy, Suryakumar Yadav has now just made an official announcement regarding the matter.

Suryakumar Yadav congratulates Shreyas Iyer, cites Mumbai factor

Suryakumar Yadav is currently leading the Triumph Knights Mumbai North East team in the ongoing 2026 Mumbai T20 season. The cricketer turned up at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday, June 6 evening, i.e., just a few hours after the BCCI removed him from national captaincy.

While speaking with the tournament commentator at the toss before his team’s crucial match against the SoBo Mumbai Falcons, the 35-year-old congratulated new Indian T20I captain Shreyas Iyer.

Instead of dwelling on his removal from the leadership role, Suryakumar chose to focus on Mumbai cricket's latest achievement, highlighting the city's growing influence on Indian cricket and expressing his delight at Shreyas Iyer's appointment as the new T20I captain.

He said “Very happy for Shreyas Iyer. We played a lot of cricket for Mumbai and India together. Most importantly 3 back to back T20i captains for India from Mumbai now and it it very proud moment for all of us at Mumbai cricket.”

Mumbai cricket’s legacy with Indian T20I team

Compatible to Suryakumar Yadav’s claims, the BCCI has indeed appointed three back-to-back Mumbai cricketers as India’s T20I captains. Shortly after Mumbai legend Rohit Sharma led the national side to 2024 T20 World Cup win, fellow Mumbaikar Suryakumar took over the reigns and defended the world title in 2026.

Shreyas Iyer, another Mumbai cricket veteran, will now be expected to take the team forward, at least up until the 2028 Olympics and the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Suryakumar Yadav undergoes poor IPL after lackluster T20 WC

After undergoing a disappointing 2026 T20 World Cup with the bat, Suryakumar also failed to leave his mark in the IPL 2026 season for the Mumbai Indians franchise. In 13 matches of the tournament, the cricketer aggregated just 270 runs at a below par average of 20.76.

Currently leading the Triumph Knights Mumbai North East cricket team in the ongoing Mumbai T20 2026 season, the veteran batter will be eager to rediscover his touch and silence critics after a lean run of form that ultimately cost him the Indian T20I captaincy.

Prior to Triumph Knights’ Mumbai T20 2026 match against the SoBo Mumbai Falcons at the Wankhede Stadium, Suryakumar got re-united with fellow Mumbai cricketers Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer.

The moment marked a special occasion for fans and Mumbai cricket, considering Shreyas was just named India’s captain to succeed Suryakumar and Rohit Sharma.
