According to emerging reports, some marquee players have apparently demanded INR 40 Cr as their retention fee ahead of the 2028 mega auction. The IPL 2027 mini auction will be held on December 16 at the ITC Grand in Goa. While the teams are preparing the blueprint to assemble formidable squads by filling up the gaps, the players have reportedly begun their planning for the subsequent mega auction.

The IPL mega auction is conducted every three years. It was held prior to the IPL 2025 and will next be conducted before the 2028 edition of the tournament.

Top-tier players quote 40 Cr as retention amount before IPL 2028 mega auction: Report

According to a Cricbuzz report, several high-profile players have proposed INR 40 Cr as their retention fee ahead of the 2028 mega auction. The report states that at least two players have even initiated discussions with their respective franchises regarding the matter.

While the IPL is hailed for producing gripping encounters and high-quality cricket, the intense competition among players in its financial environment is well known. So, if a few players manage to convince their teams and bag retention deals worth 40 Cr, others with similar profiles may follow their footsteps.

It's worth noting that the first retention bracket for a capped player was set at INR 18 Cr for the previous mega auction. The total auction purse for each team was INR 120 Cr, 5 Cr less than the amount the franchises were allotted for the 2026 season. Heinrich Klaasen was the costliest retained player, as SRH kept him for a whopping price of INR 23 Cr.

IPL mega auction purse to be increased to INR 150 Cr

The report also claims that there could be a significant rise in the total auction purse for the IPL 2028 mega auction. While it was kept at around 120 Cr for the 2025 season, it could be increased by 30 Cr to INR 150 Cr for the IPL 2028 edition.

Thus, the alleged retention quote of INR 40 Cr is slightly more than a quarter of the total budget of the franchise. Therefore, the IPL teams must take each step with great caution, as one bad retention move could potentially hamper their auction plans and squad balance.
