The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final between India and New Zealand ended as a lopsided affair as the Men in Blue successfully defended their title at home. However, as they marched towards the historic win, things heated up between Daryl Mitchell and Arshdeep Singh at the halfway mark of the chase.
In the follow-up after delivering a ball, Arshdeep's throw hit him, when Mitchell looked frustrated and expressed his anger on the field. Arshdeep went on to clarify the issue and revealed his conversation with the Kiwi batter, and explained why he ended up hitting him.

The incident happened at the 10.5 over mark as the southpaw was about to end his second over of the innings. He bowled a low full toss to Mitchell, which was tapped back towards him and the 27-year-old immediately fired a throw back towards the batter and completely missed the stumps and hit the batter.
After hitting the batter straight on the body, the bowler did not even flinch and walked back to his mark before eventually shaking hands at the end of the over. Notably, this had happened just a couple of balls after Arshdeep Singh was hit for two successive sixes by Mitchell.
In the post-match interview with Harsha Bhogle, he revealed his conversation with Mitchell after the incident and said everything was good between them.
“I went to apologise to Mitchell. My throw [at the stumps] got a reverse swing and hit his body. I told him that I did not intentionally aim at him,” he told.

Consecutive T20 World Cups for Arshdeep Singh; Daryl Mitchell in dismay
Arshdeep Singh famously played a huge part in India’s T20 World Cup win in 2024 to end India’s 11-year wait to win an ICC tournament. In the last edition, he finished as the joint-leading wicket-taker with 17 scalps in 8 innings.
These 17 wickets also included two prized scalps of Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock in his 2/20 (4) spell in the final. He backed up these prolific performances with 9 wickets in 8 innings in 2026 at home, as a second-fiddle to Jasprit Bumrah.
On the other hand, Mitchell and the Blackcaps bounced back from their group stage exit in 2024 to reach the final of the 2026 edition. They also toppled one of the best teams in the tournament, South Africa, in the semi-final. However, Mitchell, who was in fine form in the lead-up to the competition, could not do much to take his team through.
In 5 innings played, Mitchell only scored 80 runs at a strike rate of 125. After his heated exchange with Arshdeep Singh, he soon fell for 17 off 11 to Axar Patel, and they were bowled out for 159 runs.
Historic title for India
The T20 World Cup 2026 triumph on home soil meant India became the first-ever side to win this coveted trophy on home turf. To add to the long list of records created, Suryakumar Yadav’s team is also the first team to defend their title successfully — previously, no team has won the tournament in back-to-back editions.
Now they are the only team with three T20 World Cups, surpassing the West Indies and England’s two titles each. As things stand, they are the holders of 2/3 ICC white-ball tournaments and will have a chance to hold 3/3 if they win the World Cup 2027.
