All was going well for India in the T20 World Cup final against New Zealand, and the Men in Blue were cruising towards a historic win before Arshdeep Singh lost his calm and showcased his angry mode by smashing Kiwi batter, Daryl Mitchell on his right thigh.

Arshdeep is someone who hardly loses his cool, but during the grand finale at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, the Indian speedster turned angry and smacked the Kiwi batter as the Indian skipper. Suryakumar Yadav had to intervene and apologise on Arshdeep’s behalf.

Arshdeep brings out angry young man as Mitchell struck badly

The incident occurred on the 5th ball of the 11th over delivered by Arshdeep. He bowled it full and wide as Daryl Mitchell digs it back to the bowler, who angrily throws the ball towards the batter, and Mitchell got hurt on his right thigh. Tempers flared between the two players as SKY had to intervene, and Mitchell lost his cool on the Indian seamer as well.

The umpire spoke to the left-arm seamer and gave him a last warning as Arshdeep crossed the line with his actions. The incident happened because in the same over, the Kiwi batter had smacked him for a couple of huge sixes, and out of frustration, Arshdeep struck the batter.

Will Arshdeep Singh be punished by the ICC?

According to Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct, throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee, or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.

As per the rules, when assessing the seriousness of the offence, the following factors (without limitation) shall be taken into account: (i) the context of the particular situation, including, without limitation, whether the action was deliberate, reckless, negligent, and/or avoidable; (ii) whether the ball/object struck the other person; (iii) the speed at which the ball/object was thrown; and (iv) the distance from which the ball/object was thrown.

Under the ICC rules, this offence committed by Arshdeep falls under Level 1, and Level 2 breaches of the Code of Conduct. Arshdeep apologised to Mitchell, but he made a mistake, and keeping all the factors in mind, the Indian seamer could lose 50% of his T20 World Cup finale match fee.

Arshdeep Singh's average performance in the final

In the finale against New Zealand, Arshdeep Singh has so far bowled 3 overs, and has conceded 23 runs without taking a wicket.

He has not leaked runs at a rapid pace, but the pacer has largely been negotiated easily by the Kiwi batters. He has lacked control over his lines and lengths, and while other bowlers have taken wickets for fun, he has struggled for a breakthrough.

Talking about the match, India were put into bat as they posted a mammoth 255/5, courtesy of fifties from Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. In reply, the Black Caps were never really in the contest and are on the verge of a heartbreaking defeat.
