All eyes were on the former Indian captains MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma on Sunday evening as India took on New Zealand in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. As the tournament host, they stand a unique opportunity to be the first ones to lift the coveted trophy on the home turf in Ahmedabad.
After India were asked to bat first by Mitchell Santner, the fans got a glimpse of the last two Indian captains with ICC trophies to their names. Just like the semi-final in Wankhede, both Dhoni and Rohit once again shared the screen — this time on the field — as the people went berserk to see their beloved stars.

As history beckoned for the Indian camp, the legendary duo of Dhoni and Rohit were in attendance to hype up the 100,000 spectators at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
The inaugural edition-winning captain, Dhoni, and 2024 champion Rohit walked out with the trophy in hand and presented it to the crowd and fans at home. Notably, Rohit, who is still active in ODI cricket, is also the brand ambassador for the tournament.
Alongside the two, ICC chair Jay Shah was also present on the occasion just moments ahead of the anthem.

Suryakumar Yadav to join MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma?
So far, India has won two of the last three ICC T20 World Cup finals. In 2007, MS Dhoni led India to their first trophy, toppling the arch-rivals Pakistan in the final. He went on to lose the 2014 edition final against Sri Lanka, which was his last appearance in the T20 World Cup finals.
In 2024, Rohit became only the second Indian captain to win this trophy and ended the 11-year ICC trophy hiatus for the Men in Blue.
Suryakumar Yadav, who took the all-important catch to dismiss David Miller in the 2024 final, could now join the exclusive list and also become the first to win the tournament at home. If they win against New Zealand, they will also become the first team to win three T20 World Cups, surpassing the West Indies and England.
Blockbuster start to India vs New Zealand final
Despite a nervy start in the first over from Matt Henry, the in-form Sanju Samson pumped the bowler for a six after playing a few dots before he went all guns blazing alongside Abhishek Sharma. In the powerplay, the duo added a whopping 92 runs without losing any wickets.
With all eyes on him, the number 1 T20I batter in the world, Abhishek Sharma, shut down the critics with an 18-ball fifty with a four off Jacob Duffy in the 6th over.
At the end of 6 overs, Sharma, who scored the fastest fifty of the tournament, is 51* (19), while Samson, on the back of his 97* and 89, is unbeaten at 33 off 17. They notably scored 24 from Lockie Ferguson’s single over and 35 from Duffy’s two overs.
