Former Indian captain Rohit Sharma has been honoured with the prestigious ‘Padma Shri’. Back in January this year, the legendary opener was conferred with the honour alongside active women’s skipper Harmanpreet Kaur.
While Harmanpreet received her Padma Shri late last month, Rohit was handed over the same by Indian President Droupadi Murmu in Delhi on Tuesday, June 23. Notably, the former skipper will soon be travelling to England as part of India squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series.
Rohit Sharma receives Padma Shri from India's President
On Tuesday, June 23, former India captain Rohit Sharma was conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri in Delhi. Earlier in the day, the legendary opener was spotted visiting the Indian capital for the award ceremony alongside his wife Ritika Sajdeh.

The ceremony was also attended by several other Indian politicians, tennis icon Vijay Amritraj, actor Mammootty, playback singer Alka Yagnik. While the aforementioned trio are also schedule to receive their awards in the same event, Indian President Droupadi Murmu will also be handing Padma Vibhushan to some elite Indian talents.
Back in January, the Indian government confirmed that both, Rohit Sharma and Harmanpreet Kaur will be conferred with the Padma Shri. While Harmanpreet won the award last month, Rohit has now joined an illustrious list of some elite Indian cricketers to receive the prestigious honour.
Many believe that Rohit was conferred with the Padma Shri for his years of prolific run-making for Team India, and for guiding the national side to historic 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy wins in the West Indies and the UAE respectively.
Under his leadership, the Indian team also reached the final of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Rohit Sharma joins a legendary list in Indian cricket
The 39-year-old has now joined some of the greats of Indian cricket to have received the Padma Shri honour. The fourth-highest civilian award in the country, the Padma Shri has been previously handed to the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid.
India’s World Cup winning captains Kapil Dev (1983), MS Dhoni (2011) and Harmanpreet Kaur (2025) are among others who have been honoured by the Indian government for their excellence in the game.
Rohit Sharma to tour England for three ODIs
The former Indian captain will soon be travelling to England alongside the rest of his teammates. Team India, under captain Shubman Gill, will be taking on hosts to play a three-match ODI series between July 14 and July 19.
Rohit was recently selected in Team India squad for the tour, after attaining full recovery from the hamstring injury he sustained during the IPL 2026 season. The prolific opener also played three ODI matches against Afghanistan at home earlier this month.
