India cricket veterans Rohit Sharma and Harmanpreet Kaur have been nominated as recipients of the Padma Shri Award in the field of sports, a recognition of their immense contributions to Indian cricket across formats.
Rohit Sharma’s honour comes on the back of his remarkable leadership tenure with the Indian men’s team, while Harmanpreet Kaur is set to be conferred the award for her iconic role in India women’s cricket history. She became the first Indian women’s captain to lift an ICC Women’s World Cup after India defeated South Africa at the DY Patil Stadium in 2025.
Contributions of Rohit Sharma and Harmanpreet Kaur in Indian cricket
Rohit Sharma guided India to two ICC titles, winning the men’s T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy in 2025. Although Rohit retired from the shortest format and also stepped away from Test cricket in 2025, and now features only in ODIs, his contribution as a leader and as a batter remains unquestionable.
Rohit Sharma, who made his international debut in 2007, has amassed 11,577 runs in ODIs, along with 4,231 runs in T20Is and 4,301 runs in Test cricket. He also boasts 61 half-centuries and 33 centuries in the ODI format.
Meanwhile, Harmanpreet Kaur continues to be a celebrated figure in Indian women’s cricket. She became only the second Indian captain to win a World Cup on home soil, with MS Dhoni being the first to achieve the feat when he led the men’s team to the 2011 World Cup title.
Notably, Harmanpreet will also become the first Indian women’s cricketer in 11 years to receive the Padma Shri Award, following legendary batter Mithali Raj.
The 36-year-old Harmanpreet Kaur has played 161 women’s ODIs, scoring over 4,400 runs, including seven centuries and 22 half-centuries. In T20Is, she has accumulated 3,784 runs from 187 matches at an average of 29.33.

For the unaware, the Padma Shri Award is one of India’s most prestigious civilian honours, given to individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the country.
It is the fourth-highest civilian award, after the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan. Notably, the last Indian cricketer to receive the Padma Shri was Ravichandran Ashwin, who was conferred the honour in 2025.

With both Rohit Sharma and Harmanpreet Kaur being awarded the Padma Shri, it once again highlights the massive contributions these two icons have made for Indian cricket, cementing their legacy and leadership.
While Rohit has stepped away from international cricket, Harmanpreet continues to lead the Indian women’s team, adding further chapters to her illustrious career.
Harmanpreet and Rohit in red-hot form
Harmanpreet Kaur has been in dominant form in the ongoing Women’s Premier League 2026, as she is currently averaging 60 from her six outings, amassing 240 runs at a strike rate of 143.71.
Interestingly, the “Hitman,” Rohit Sharma, has also been in prolific form in recent times. He looked sharp during the Australia ODI series, although he remained quiet with the bat in the New Zealand series.
Rohit Sharma averaged 48.67 from his three matches against South Africa and also smashed a brilliant 155 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025–26, underlining his continued class and consistency.
