In a significant development after Pakistan's disappointing exit from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, the Mohsin Naqvi‑led Pakistan Cricket Board has announced that it will not undertake a major overhaul of the team structure. The decision comes despite Pakistan's failure to qualify for the semifinals of the global tournament.
After a promising start to the World Cup, Pakistan’s campaign faltered at the Super 8 stage. The team, led by Salman Ali Agha, won only one match in that round, a narrow five‑run victory over Sri Lanka and saw their tournament hopes end due to net run‑rate calculations.
The team had earlier suffered a defeat at the hands of England and saw their match against New Zealand abandoned due to rain.
Pakistan's group‑stage journey had suggested better fortunes. They won against the Netherlands, and Namibia sandwiched around a 61‑run loss to arch‑rivals the India.
That performance was good enough to propel them into the Super 8 but not to sustain a push into the last four.
Mohsin Naqvi's PCB to make 'no-changes' in team setup
Despite the buildup of criticism from fans, the PCB has chosen continuity over sweeping change.
Chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s PCB has reportedly confirmed that there will be no changes to the captaincy or coaching staff across formats, according to Geosuper.tv.
Head coach Mike Hesson will remain in his role under his existing contract, and the board has asked him to work on future preparations, especially with an eye toward the 2027 Cricket World Cup, which will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

It is important to note that in the same report, the PCB has also retained its leadership core. Salman Ali Agha will continue as the T20I captain, and Shaheen Afridi will remain the captain in ODIs.
The PCB has been clear that, while no radical overhaul will take place, there will be an emphasis on reviewing performance, strengthening team culture, and preparing for future global events.
Aaqib Javed, Director of the High‑Performance Centre, along with the rest of the selection committee, will stay in their current roles to provide continuity and help guide younger talent into the senior setup.
Sarfaraz Ahmed appointed as Pakistan's head coach in Tests
Earlier, Mohsin Naqvi and PCB have made some changes in the broader coaching and selection framework.
Long‑serving Test head coach Azhar Mahmood resigned from his position, and former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has been appointed to take over those duties.
The board has also accepted the resignation of senior selector Aleem Dar, who stepped down following the team’s poor showing, reportedly due to internal disagreements during the World Cup selection process.
Pakistan's next assignment after T20 World Cup 2026
It is worth noting that Pakistan will next face Bangladesh in a three‑match ODI series from March 11 to 15. The first ODI match will be played on March 11 at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium, the second ODI will be played on March 13, and the last and final match of the series will be played on March 15.
