The last few days have been truly forgettable for the Sri Lankan cricket fans. Led by Dasun Shanaka, the co-hosts crashed out of the T20 World Cup 2026 following crushing defeats against England and New Zealand.

Although skipper Shanaka's batting exploits earned him massive applause from all corners of the world, the Lankan side suffered a humiliating exit with three straight defeats in the Super 8 stage.

After Sri Lanka's torrid T20 World Cup run, the Lankan government has approached the Jay Shah-led ICC to shift the administrative responsibilities from the existing SLC setup.

How Sri Lanka's fate turned upside down in T20 World Cup 2026?

Under Dasun Shanaka's leadership, Sri Lanka had an incredible start to the T20 World Cup 2026. The co-hosts registered a narrow 20-run victory over their Irish counterparts before swatting aside Oman and Australia in consecutive matches.

However, their performance regressed as the tournament proceeded. Zimbabwe handed them a humiliating defeat in front of their home crowd before the Lankans succumbed to crushing losses in their Super 8 fixtures against England and New Zealand.

Thus, their fate dramatically turned upside down, and they eventually got eliminated from the competition, with England and New Zealand qualifying for the semifinals.

Sri Lanka government seeks Jay Shah's help to save SLC from turmoil

The Sri Lankan cricket team failed to capitalise on the home advantage at the T20 World Cup 2026. Despite getting off to an ideal start in the tournament, Sri Lanka failed to live up to the expectations and eventually missed out on the semifinals.

After the team's shambolic Super 8 elimination, the Sri Lankan government suspected governance and managerial flaws in the SLC.

As the Island Nation tries to recover from its T20 World Cup debacle, the government has urged the ICC to handover the administration of the SLC to either an interim committee or an authorised official.

As reported by the country's leading media house, NewsWire, Sri Lanka's Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage has initiated a conversation with the Jay Shah-led ICC, seeking wholesale changes in the country's cricketing governance.

The report also claimed that Sri Lankan president Anura Kumara Dissanayake has also been involved in the discussions, with the country's most significant leadership group planning wholesale changes at the administrative level.

The Lankan government wants to establish a well-oiled mechanism, comprising an interim committee, to take over the responsibilities from the SLC in order to restore smooth governance and management of cricket in the Island nation.

Sanath Jayasuriya's coaching career in jeopardy

The Sri Lankan side's underwhelming performance earned massive criticism for skipper Shanaka and head coach Sanath Jayasuriya.

As things stand, the Sri Lankan legend is on the verge of resigning from his role, although his contract is valid till October 2026.

Jayasuriya, who was appointed as Sri Lanka's head coach on a two-year contract, recently stated that he wouldn't continue in his role despite playing a pivotal role in the team's white-ball renaissance.
