It has been understood that the Mohsin Naqvi-led PCB will appoint former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed as the head coach of the Pakistan Test team. The Men in Green are preparing to take on Bangladesh after crashing out of the T20 World Cup 2026

As they gear up for the high-voltage series, a report claims the PCB is set to rope in Sarfaraz Ahmed as the new head coach of the Test side.

Sarfaraz Ahmed set to take charge as Pakistan head coach in Tests

It's worth mentioning that Pakistan's Test head coach spot has been vacant since October 2025.

Recently, former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood served as the Test team's head coach when Pakistan crossed swords against South Africa. However, his appointment was made on an interim basis, and the PCB is planning to bring in Sarfaraz Ahmed in a permanent role.

According to Geo Super, the former captain is all set to take charge as Pakistan's new head coach in Tests, with the PCB likely to make a formal announcement soon.

Pakistan will face Bangladesh in two Test matches in May as part of the current World Test Championship cycle. The first Test will kick off on May 8, with the decider taking place on May 16.

As the report claims, the Bangladesh series will mark Sarfaraz's first major assignment as the head coach of the Pakistani Test side.

Sarfaraz Ahmed's career, leadership and coaching credentials

Regarded for his gritty batting and neat glove work, Sarfaraz Ahmed played 232 international matches for Pakistan. He was one of the proven performers for the Men in Green, scoring 3133 runs, including two centuries and 14 half-centuries, in white-ball cricket.

The veteran cricketer was particularly instrumental in Test cricket, as he went on to amass 3031 runs at a healthy average of 37.4. The keeper-batter event struck four hundreds and 21 fifties, showcasing his mettle in the purest form of the game.

Sarfaraz enjoyed stellar success as Pakistan's ODI captain, leading them to a historic Champions Trophy triumph in 2017. Under his leadership, the Men in Green defeated arch-rivals India comprehensively, securing the coveted trophy on English soil.

One of the most successful Pakistan skippers in the shortest format, having led them to 29 wins across 37 T20Is.

Sarfaraz Ahmed, who served as the mentor of the Pakistan team, which won the under-19 Asia Cup, has also led PSL franchise Quetta Gladiators. The former cricketer is currently associated with the Pakistan Shaheens, who are taking on the England Lions.

Thus, the former captain has immense experience and has worked with budding cricketers at the grassroots level. So, his appointment as the Pakistan head coach could help the Shan Masood-led side's redemption in Test cricket.

Meanwhile, despite a Super 8 exit from the T20 World Cup 2026, the PCB has yet to take a call on existing white-ball coach Mike Hesson.

Where do Pakistan sit in WTC points table?

Talking about Pakistan, the Shan Masood-led outfit has played two Tests in the current WTC cycle. They have won one game, claiming the fifth place with a PCT of 50. Interestingly, the Pakistani side ranks just above the Indian team, which occupies the sixth spot, having lost four of its nine WTC matches.
