England cricket has once again found itself dealing with an off-field controversy involving one of its players. Brydon Carse was reportedly involved in an incident outside a nightclub in Derby after Durham’s County Championship victory over Derbyshire.

The England fast bowler was seen being led away in handcuffs while several police officers surrounded him. The footage has quickly attracted attention because Carse remains part of England’s plans for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s.

Brydon Carse Detained By Police From Derby Nightclub

Brydon Carse was detained by police outside a nightclub in Derby following Durham’s County Championship victory over Derbyshire. A short video circulating on social media showed Carse standing outside the venue with his hands cuffed while being surrounded by four police officers.

Durham and England team-mate Matthew Potts was seen speaking to Carse in the footage. The nightclub is believed to be Molly Malone’s Irish Tavern in Derby, although the exact circumstances that led to the incident remain unclear.

Importantly, Carse was not arrested, but was briefly detained at the scene before returning to the team hotel soon afterwards.

Carse had travelled to Derby as part of Durham’s County Championship campaign after being left unused during England’s first Test against Pakistan at Headingley.

Durham secured an impressive victory over Derbyshire, with Stokes producing a sensational spell of five wickets for just 17 runs to help dismiss Derbyshire for 84 in their second innings. Carse also contributed to the win by taking two wickets in the match.

Following Durham’s victory, some members of the team went out in Derby to celebrate. It was during this outing that the incident involving Carse reportedly took place.

Was Ben Stokes Present During The Recent Incident?

Ex-England skipper Ben Stokes was reportedly present at the nightclub when the incident involving Brydon Carse took place. Footage from outside the venue showed Stokes standing close to Carse and a police officer as the England fast bowler was dealt with by police.

However, Stokes was not there as part of an official England team gathering. Stokes had been playing for Durham in the same County Championship match against Derbyshire.

His contribution was particularly significant as Durham completed a dramatic victory, with Stokes' five-wicket haul helping bowl Derbyshire out for just 84.

However, the presence of Stokes at the scene does not necessarily suggest that the England squad had organised a night out ahead of the second Test.

The incident has nevertheless raised eyebrows because it comes after several disciplinary and drinking-related episodes involving England players over the past year.

England have previously had to deal with controversies surrounding late-night outings, including the infamous Ashes trip to Noosa. Harry Brook was also involved in an incident in Wellington last year when he was punched by a nightclub bouncer in the early hours before an ODI against New Zealand.

More recently, Stokes and Gus Atkinson were stood down for the following Test after staying out beyond England's midnight curfew during the New Zealand series.

ECB To Launch Investigation On Carse

The England and Wales Cricket Board has confirmed that it is investigating the incident involving Brydon Carse. An ECB spokesperson said, “We are aware of an incident which is reported to have taken place in Derby last night, and are currently investigating. We will provide a further update when possible.”

The Cricket Regulator is also expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Carse was not on England duty when the alleged incident occurred, which could be an important factor in determining whether any disciplinary action is taken.

After previous controversies involving players and late-night drinking, England had introduced stricter expectations around player behaviour. However, Joe Root's return as Test captain brought a different approach, with the former captain reportedly removing the team's midnight curfew and telling his players to “be adults”.

That policy will now come under renewed attention following the Carse incident. Carse has also previously faced disciplinary action during his career. In 2024, he was suspended for three months by the Cricket Regulator after admitting to betting on cricket between 2017 and 2019.

Will Brydon Carse Play England vs Pakistan Tests?

Brydon Carse remains in England's squad for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord's, which is scheduled to begin on August 27. The England squad is expected to assemble in London on Monday, with training beginning on Tuesday ahead of the Test.

Carse was an unused member of the England squad during the first Test at Headingley, where England completed a dominant victory inside three days.

The fast bowler has not played for England in any format since the Ashes series in Australia, where he emerged as England's leading wicket-taker after featuring in all five Tests.

His return to the squad could therefore have been an important opportunity to push for a place in the Lord's playing XI. For now, however, his involvement in the second Test remains a matter for England's management and the outcome of the investigation.
