With Ben Stokes retired and Brendon McCullum sacked, the England team management needed a new Test captain and a coach before the Pakistan series next month, and on Thursday, the England and Wales Cricket Board officially revealed the two new names to succeed Stokes and McCullum.

England will take on Pakistan in a three-match Test series at home, and the ECB Director, Rob Key, moved in swiftly as Joe Root replaced Ben Stokes, and Stephen Fleming succeeded McCullum.

Root replaces Ben Stokes and Fleming succeeds McCullum

It was already rumoured that Root would replace Stokes as the new Test captain, and the decision was made official by the ECB. On the other hand, Stephen Fleming, who recently stepped down from the post of CSK coach, has joined the English red-ball team.

Interestingly, this is Root’s second stint as Test captain, having been removed from the post in 2022 when Stokes replaced him. There were whispers that England might appoint Harry Brook as the Test captain, but they didn't want to burden him with captaincy across all three formats.

Root, the most successful England Test captain

Root first became the England Test captain in 2017, and till 2022, he led the Three Lions in red-ball cricket. Interestingly, the Yorkshire cricketer holds the record for captaining the England Men’s team in most Test matches (65), and he also holds the feat of winning the most Tests as England skipper (27).

After an underwhelming performance by the English side in 2021, Root left the position in 2022 before taking the role on an interim basis during the second Test match against New Zealand recently.

His first assignment as the Test captain will be against the touring Pakistan side at home.

Why England appointed Fleming as Test head coach

After retiring from international cricket and playing in the inaugural IPL season, Fleming was appointed the Chennai Super Kings coach, and the franchise witnessed a rise on the field as, under his guidance, the team attained success.

The 53-year-old led CSK to five IPL titles (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023), and also won the Champions League T20 tournament with the Yellow Army. He is one of the most decorated coaches in the world, and apart from CSK, Fleming has also been associated with The Hundred franchise, the Southern Brave.

Tactically, Fleming is brilliant, and is a serial match-winner, having shown results with the CSK side since the 2009 season.

Fleming beats competition from top candidates to land England job

Fleming was not the first name that was shortlisted by the ECB for the post of England’s Test head coach. RCB coach, Andy Flower was the firm favourite for a second stint with England, but the Zimbabwean rejected the ECB offer to stay with the IPL team.

Flower, Justin Langer, Jonathan Trott, and Kumar Sangakkara were the other candidates shortlisted by the ECB for the head coach role, but the Rob Key-led management decided to rope in Fleming as soon as he left his CSK post.

England have little chance to qualify for the WTC final, and Fleming’s first job would be to identify the weaknesses to work on before the Pakistan series at home commences.
