Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson now face an uncertain situation in England’s setup after an incident at a nightclub involving a Saracens rugby player during the early hours of Monday.

This episode happened soon after England’s strong win over New Zealand by 115 runs in the first Test in London. Notably, the timing of the event has drawn attention from officials, as it followed a major victory celebration.

It is important to note that ECB has not shared full details. Neither Ben Stokes nor Atkinson was injured. A report from Telegraph states confrontation began when a rugby player allegedly attempted to punch Atkinson, however struck an ECB security guard instead.

The guard was present with the players inside the nightclub. He needed urgent medical treatment and stitches following the incident.

"Stokes and Atkinson breached the team's new midnight curfew and were embroiled in a melee with a Saracens academy player," a report in The Telegraph said.

It remains unclear whether additional punches were thrown during the chaos that followed. England cricket sources have stated that the players were not the ones who started the incident. Police were not required at the venue in Chelsea.

A source shared the following view: "The Saracens player caused this and has a reputation. I would not want the England cricket captain to lose his job over this," the report quoted a source as saying.

ECB Issues Statement On Ben Stokes And Gus Atkinson

On Monday evening, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that the matter has been referred to the Cricket Regulator.

"The ECB is currently investigating a breach of team protocols following the conclusion of the first Men's Test against New Zealand," the ECB's statement said.

"We are currently seeking further information, and an announcement regarding the squad for the second Test will be made in due course. The Cricket Regulator has been informed and we will provide a further update when possible," the board added.

What Possible Action Will The ECB Take On Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson?

According to ESPNCricinfo, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson may miss the second Test at The Oval starting June 17, while inquiries continue.

The board also mentioned that updates will follow once more information is collected. An official squad announcement will come later.

It is important to note that the ECB has dealt with discipline issues in the past. Earlier in January, the board brought back a strict night curfew after concerns during the Ashes tour of Australia, where players such as Jacob Bethell and Ben Duckett were accused of unprofessional behaviour.

Now, similar rules might lead to strict action regarding Stokes and Atkinson. England will face New Zealand in the second Test of the three-match series at The Oval from June 17 to June 21.
