Marnus Labuschagne has been walking on a very thin rope after his string of recent failures in Australia's Test setup. Labuschagne scored a total of 36 runs across the three innings he played for Australia in the Bangladesh series, averaging just 12.00.

This marks one of the lowest averages he has recorded in his career in a series and highlights a worrying decline in form that could eventually lead to his removal from the Australian Test setup. As the woeful batting display continued at Mackay, Australia's skipper Pat Cummins delivered a clear verdict on his future with the national team.

Pat Cummins Shares Final Verdict On Marnus Labuschagne After Bangladesh Horror

Cummins, the skipper of the Australian cricket team, did not confirm Labuschagne's immediate future after the win. However, he clearly indicated that time is running out for Labuschagne to deliver with the bat.

Cummins shared that Labuschagne has been in solid touch off the field and in the nets, but his constant failure to convert that form into performances when it matters could get him into trouble.

"He has not scored the runs he would've liked. I did say a couple of days ago - and I think it still stands - he's been batting fantastically well off the field. But it doesn't mean much; you've got to convert that into runs out there," Cummins said.

Pat Cummins further stated that Marnus Labuschagne still has some time to prove himself, while backing his class and ability.

"We've got a bit of time. Selectors will get together… in the next week or two and start nutting out that next Test squad. We know he's class when he's at his best. And going into this series, we thought he was pretty close to his best. But he needs to start transferring that into runs out there, so we'll see in the next couple of weeks," Cummins added.

Why Labuschagne Might Fall Out Of Favour With Australia?

Labuschagne has experienced a worrying dip in form since 2024. Since the Pakistan Test series that year, Labuschagne has managed to average only 25 or below in several stretches and has struggled to convert starts into big scores. He has considerably stuttered when Australia have needed an anchor at No. 3.

Labuschagne scored 31, 1 and 4 in the three innings he played against Bangladesh. Although he had a decent Sheffield Shield season with Queensland, averaging 37.50 across 14 innings, his performances in the Ashes and the WTC final have been far less impressive.

Looking at his numbers year-wise, 2026 is the second-worst year of Labuschagne's Test career, as he has averaged 24.20 at a strike rate of 61.73, without registering a single fifty or hundred in five innings.

Will Marnus Labuschagne Be Replaced Soon?

Pat Cummins' warning was already a threatening sign for Labuschagne, who will be looking to produce a substantial knock for himself. In fact, Australia greats such as Steve Waugh, among others, have also warned him that he needs to produce a memorable performance or risk losing his place in the team soon.

With Labuschagne seemingly on the verge of losing his Test spot, names such as Josh Inglis and Nathan McSweeney have emerged as potential replacements. Their impressive Sheffield Shield seasons and performances in county cricket make a solid case for their inclusion and could further put Labuschagne's future in the Test side under pressure.

Although no confirmation has been given regarding his removal or continuation with the team, Pat Cummins' warning to Marnus Labuschagne is certainly something the 32-year-old should take seriously.
