Bangladesh crushed Pakistan by 78 runs in the second Test to seal the two-match series 2-0. Defending 437 runs in the final two days, Bangladesh spinner Taijul Islam (6-120) picked up six wickets in the decisive innings, including nine for the match as the visitors folded up for just 358 early on Day 5.

After the win, Bangladesh’s spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed lashed out at the visiting Pakistan group. Being a former Pakistan cricketer himself, Ahmed expressed his mixed feelings over the result, claiming that he refused to turn up for Bangladesh’s post-series group photoshoot.

Mushtaq Ahmed ‘upset’ about Pakistan’s defeat to Bangladesh

While speaking on the 11th Hour, former Pakistan cricketer and active Bangladesh spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed criticized Shan Masood and co. for losing their away Test series.

Ahmed added that while he was jubilant over Bangladesh’s emphatic victory, he is feeling “very upset” over Pakistan’s downfall. The former ‘Men in Green’ cricketer even claimed that he did not turn up for Bangladesh’s victorious group photoshoot after the series result.

The Bangladesh coach said “Being a coach, I’m satisfied with Bangladesh’s win. But I’m very upset about Pakistan’s loss, that’s a natural feeling. I didn’t turn up for the group photo either after Bangladesh.”

BAN vs PAK 2nd Test: As it happened

Interestingly, it was a Bangladesh spinner who made the difference between the two sides in the final two days of the series-deciding second Test in Sylhet. Defending 437 runs for a win, Taijul Islam picked up six wickets at an expense of 120 runs in his industrious 35-over workload.

Taijul claimed the key wickets of Pakistan’s comeback man Babar Azam, captain Shan Masood, and senior all-rounder Salman Agha before mopping up the visitor’s tail at 358.

For Pakistan, both Shan Masood and Salman Agha struck impervious half-centuries, while Mohammad Rizwan scored a fighting 94 off 166 balls with 10 boundaries. However, Rizwan’s dismissal at the hands of Shoriful Islam tilted the tide completely in Bangladesh’s favor early on Day 5.

Earlier in the match, a Litton Das century pushed Bangladesh to 278 on the opening day, before three-wicket hauls from Nahid Rana and Taijul Islam kept Pakistan down for just 232 in response.

Emboldened with a handy 46-run lead, a monumental 137 from Mushfiqur Rahim stretched Bangladesh’s total to 390 to set up an improbable target for the visitors.

Pakistan slips to number eight on ICC WTC standings

The outcome also forced the Pakistan team to slip further down to number eight on the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) standings. Shan Masood and co. have managed to secure just a solitary win from their four matches this cycle, and have suffered crushing defeats in each of their last three Tests.

With crucial WTC points on the line, the Pakistan cricket team will now tour England for a three-match Test series in August and September. The first Test will be played between August 19 and August 23 at Headingley in Leeds.
