Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood is reportedly set to make a major decision regarding his future in red-ball cricket following the team’s disappointing 2-0 series defeat against Bangladesh.

The speculation gained momentum after Pakistan suffered a crushing 78-run loss in the second and final Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday. As a result, Bangladesh completed a historic clean sweep against Pakistan in the two-match Test series.

Importantly, this was Pakistan’s first-ever Test defeat in Bangladesh. Before this match, Pakistan had won seven out of their eight Tests on Bangladeshi soil, while the remaining match ended in a draw.

Shan Masood’s Captaincy Record

It is worth noting that Shan Masood became Pakistan’s Test captain after Babar Azam stepped down from captaincy in all formats. Notably, Masood was appointed Pakistan’s red-ball captain in 2023 before the three-match Test series against Australia.

However, his captaincy started on a disappointing note as Pakistan suffered a 3-0 series defeat in Australia. Overall, Masood has captained the Men in Green in 16 Tests. Under his leadership, Pakistan have won only four matches and lost 12, giving him a win percentage of 25 percent.

Shan Masood Speaks About Pakistan’s Test Future

In the aftermath of the defeat, Shan Masood addressed the media and spoke candidly about his vision for Pakistan’s Test setup.

Shan Masood further acknowledged that key decisions concerning the team’s direction and structure ultimately lie with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

However, he maintained that his objective has consistently been to elevate standards within the Test side and build a stronger cricketing culture.

“I have a clear intention. If I also took up a role in Test cricket, it was to improve Test cricket. There are certain matters that need to be discussed and debated with the board, and the final decision always rests with the board.

My intention and purpose have always been to find ways to improve this team. You must always accept challenges and also embrace opportunities,” Masood said during the post-match press conference.

PCB Expected To Review Pakistan’s Test Leadership

Although reports about Shan Masood’s possible resignation are growing, neither Masood nor the PCB has officially confirmed anything yet. Still, Pakistan’s embarrassing series defeat is expected to lead to serious discussions about the future of the Test team and its leadership.

Meanwhile, after this defeat, Pakistan remain in eighth place in the World Test Championship 2025-27 standings. The Men in Green has managed to win only one out of their four Test matches so far.

In addition, Pakistan also suffered an eight-point deduction because of a slow over-rate offence during the previous Test.

What’s Next For Pakistan?

Looking ahead, Pakistan now face an important phase in their Test journey. The team will next tour the Caribbean islands for a two-match Test series against the West Indies July.

After that, Pakistan will take on the England in a challenging three-match Test series scheduled for August and September later this year.
